• North Tonawanda Mayor David Burgio was almost ready to announce the name of the city’s new fire chief. Two candidates were at the top of the mayor’s list — Gregory Frank and Joseph Krantz.

• Pastor Dave Beutel of Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda had just married CB Phillips and Tina Arnold high above Niagara Falls aboard the Flight of the Angels balloon.

1988 — 25 years ago

Dr. Gerald Glose, assistant superintendent of the NT School District, resigned to take a post with the Frontier School District.

• Soviet Ambassador, Yuri Dubinin, and his family toured the Niagara Power Project on their visit to Western New York.

1963 — 50 years ago

• Kenmore Mercy Hospital observed its 12th anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated in the hospital’s chapel by the Rev. William Gleason.

• President Kennedy was expected to announce approval of a proposed multi-million-dollar “one shot” sale of surplus U. S. wheat to the Soviet Union.
