Daniel Killian announced that he would be retiring in early 2004 after 26 years as the director of the North Tonawanda Public Library.

• Buffalo Suzuki Strings marked the grand opening of its concert hall on Webster Street in North Tonawanda.

1963 — 50 years ago

• A unique automatic fire alarm system with a direct link with fire headquarters was installed in Hamp Funeral Home, the first of its kind in Tonawanda.

• The Sample opened its newest store at the Mid-City Plaza. Mrs. Pat Manna was store manager and Mrs. Helen Setlik was her assistant.

1943 — 70 years ago

George C. Gardner, for some years manager of the local Endicott Johnson shoe store, was promoted to District Supervisor of Western New York outlets. Mr. Gardner had been with the company for 30 years.
