Power, phones down after crash

Tonawanda News — Portions of Gilmore and Center avenues in North Tonawanda were shut down for much of Thursday after a truck struck a utility pole, knocking out power and land line telephone service in the neighborhood.

Residents said the incident took place in the 7 a.m. hour Thursday. The power outage affected about 200 homes in the area.

Residents described the vehicle that struck the pole as a garbage truck. NT Public Works Superintendent Bradley Rowles said he was aware of the outage but had not been informed that a city vehicle was involved. He said it was possible the truck belonged to a private refuse company.

Power was restored to the neighborhood Thursday afternoon but Verizon land line telephones and Internet service remained out for all Thursday and wasn’t restored until Friday afternoon, residents said.
