NT shops unite to fight cancer

Three North Tonawanda businesses band together for event to benefit Cancer Services

Tonawanda News — Maybe it’s a friend. Maybe it’s a parent, a sibling, a loved one. Maybe it’s even yourself.

But sooner or later, everyone’s affected by cancer — and Monday, three businesses in North Tonawanda are banding together to spread that awareness and support the fight against all forms of the disease.

Luxuries for Lavender, a “progressive evening of style, fashion, food and wine” sponsored by Signature Salon and Day Spa on Division Street, Hip Gypsy and Webster’s Bistro and Bar on Webster Street, will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday. Proceeds from the event will benefit Cancer Services of Niagara County.

Barbara Hughes of Webster’s Bistro and Bar said the business owners had talked about doing an event for October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but ultimately decided to do something a little different. Lavender, the theme color for Monday’s event, is representative of awareness of cancer in all its forms, she said.

“All of our families have been affected by different types of cancer. We wanted to do something more,” Hughes said. “My mom has been fighting ovarian cancer for 2 1/2 years; it hits home with me specifically. We were talking about how do we build awareness of that.”

Kelly Duguay, owner of Signature Salon and Day Spa, said the event not only draws attention to local businesses, but is their way of giving back to the community.

“Everybody’s family has been affected somehow, some way,” she said, “and it’s not just breast cancer. so we decided to do it for all.”

Participants will begin from 3 to 6 p.m. at Signature Salon and Day Spa at 603 Division St. Duguay said they’ll pick up their passports and bags for the event and be able to take part in an open house with hair products, giveaways and informational pamphlets from Cancer Services. Rosanna’s Jewelry & Accessories at the salon with also offer 15 percent of sales for the evening to Cancer Services.
