Tonawanda News — Grand Island's Bobby Ross scored in the 82nd minute as FC Buffalo won on the road, 1-0, over Zanesville Athletic at the Maysville Athletic Complex in Zanesville, Ohio.
Ross, the former Viking who will enter his senior year at SUNY Brockport this fall, took possession of the ball in midfield, worked his way around several Zanesville defenders, and fired the game-winning shot into the net.
FC Buffalo, who had several chances but couldn't score until Ross' tally, avoided going down 1-0 in the first half when goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin stopped a penalty kick followed by the rebound.
With the victory, the Blitzers (8-0-3) clinched the second seed in the National Premier Soccer League's Great Lakes division.
The game was often chippy, with FC Buffalo players Ryan Walter and Chris Walter both picking up yellow cards.
FC Buffalo will finish the regular season at home on Sunday against Detroit City, beginning at 1 p.m. at All-High Stadium in Buffalo.
The Blitzers will then open the NPSL playoffs on July 13 in Detroit against the Erie Admirals, the club's most hated rivals.
