FRIDAY: Members of 914th Airlift Wing in Niagara Falls head to Iraq (3:16 p.m.)

Associated Press

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — More than 70 members of the 914th Airlift Wing are off to Iraq.

The group took a C-130 out of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station late Friday morning for what is expected to be a one- to two-month deployment assisting combat troops.

For some of the western New York reservists, it will be their first trip to the war zone. Others have been through it before. Technical Sgt. Maurice Shivers III was deploying for a fourth time. His mother, Georgia, says it never gets any easier to see her 34-year-old son go.

This is the first deployment from the 914th in more than a year.
