The state police will be conducting a zero-tolerance seat belt enforcement blitz beginning Monday and running through the end of the month.
Maj. Christopher Cummings announced Tuesday that the “Click It Or Ticket — Buckle Up New York” campaign will bring together over 500 police agencies in the state, holding checkpoints and dedicating patrol units to seat belt enforcement.
“Buckling up clearly saves lives, and if you don’t, you will be ticketed,” Cummings said. “Unfortunately, too many New Yorkers still need a tough reminder, and we’re going to provide it.”
Last year, during “Buckle Up America Week,” which included the Memorial Day weekend, state police investigated four fatal crashes in New York, which claimed five lives, according to a press release from the state police.
Three of those killed were not wearing their seat belts.
During that same period, troopers issued 9,758 safety restraint citations, including 496 for child seat violations.
Cummings said local troopers will conduct 26 checkpoints this month.
