THURSDAY: Open house set for Coast Guard (5:03 p.m.)

STATION NIAGARA: Informational event is on Saturday.

by staff reports

Linda Griesbaum says people in the area don’t really know what the U.S. Coast Guard is all about.

Considering the station near Fort Niagara in the Village of Youngstown, maybe they should find out, she said.

That’s the reason behind an open house at the Coast Guard Station Niagara from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“People don’t know what their responsibilites are down here,” said Griesbaum, Coast Guard Auxiliary Public Affairs Officer. “You’ll be able to ask questions of any of the coast guard crew about their duties and what area of responsibility they have down here on Station Niagara.”

The open house is being held in conjunction with the national Safe Boating and Armed Forces weeks. It’s an annual event held by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, which has about 20 members locally.

There will be safe boats available for tours from both the U.S. and Canadian coast guards. An Armed Forces Day proclamation will be at 9:45 a.m. at the Youngstown Docks, followed by a Safe Boating proclamation at 11 a.m. at Station Niagara. Border Patrols will land a helicopter at the station in the afternoon.

There will also be a free boat safety inspection by the Auxiliary at the Fort Niagara boat launch ramp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
