WEDNESDAY: Council OKs bond for Spaulding Fibre demolition (2:01 p.m.)

The City of Tonawanda Common Council approved bonding $3.5 million to progress the demolition of the abandoned Spaulding Fibre site.

The $3.5 million is slated strictly for demolition of the above ground structures. But until contractors examine the project there’s no way of knowing how much can be razed for that amount, according to City Treasurer Joe Hogenkamp.

“We put out the bids in September for the 13 sections, and how much work we can get done is all contingent on how those bids come back,” Hogenkamp said.

Once that work is complete, there will still be the below ground portions to contend with.

“We’re basically taking down the structure,” Mayor Ron Pilozzi said. “There’s still a lot of substructure we’ll be taking a look at.”
