NT man indicted on child porn charges

Tonawanda News — A North Tonawanda man was indicted Thursday in U.S. Federal Court on child pornography charges.

Thomas A. Sparks, 21, was arrested for a June 25 incident, during which he allegedly received 94 images of child pornography. Sparks also possessed a SanDisk Cruzer Glide 4GB USB flash drive, which allegedly contained images of child pornography.

According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Sparks had knowledge that authorities may have been on their way to his residence to conduct interviews and a search, he then smashed the drive, which was later discovered in the trash at a home owned by a relative. Some of these images depicted a prepubescent minor and a minor under 12 years old, the authorities said.

Sparks is now facing a three-charge indictment with receipt and possession of child pornography. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango will be handling the case. The charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.

The indictment is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Brian P. Boetig.
