Fishing tourney weekend set

Tonawanda News — The DEC Free Fishing Weekend and the Hooked on the Tonawandas Fishing Tournament will take place June 28 and 29.

The tournament registration tent will be in the Gateway Harbor Pavilion on the North Tonawanda side of the canal. Register from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29.

The Cast Off Concert featuring the Black Sheep Syndrome will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and the awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. June 29.

Once a year the NYSDEC allows a weekend in June where anyone can fish without a license and Gateway Harbor in the Tonawandas takes advantage of this by staging its annual fishing tournament with cash awards and prizes valued at $3,000.

This year's benefit charity is Twin Cities Community Outreach.

Contestants will try their luck at catching the largest fish by weight in each of the following categories: smallmouth/largemouth bass, Northern pike, walleye, carp, perch and bullhead/channel cat.

First place for catching the largest game fish is $500 and first place for largest carp, perch or bullhead/channel cat is $150. Second and third place winners will also receive cash prizes and the junior division for youth age 15 and under may fish for merchandise prizes and a trophy.

Registration fee for the tournament is $15 and forms are available at Niagara Outdoors, 223 Witmer Road; Rainbow Sports, 267 Oliver St.; Wiggling Willies Bait Shop, 457 Oliver St., all in North Tonawanda; Scime's Tackle, 2815 River Road; Big Catch Bait & Tackle, 2287 Niagara St.; Russ's Bait and Tackle, 1226 Niagara St.; and Worms 'n Things, 1111 Furhmann Blvd., all in Buffalo.

Bait and tackle will be available at the registration location.

A food and beverage stand manned by American Legion Post 264 will be near the registration area.

Youth under age 16 may register as an adult to win cash prizes or they can fish for free and win merchandise prizes.
