Tops to buy Budwey's in Newfane

Tonawanda News — Tops Friendly Markets announced Wednesday that they will be purchasing the Budwey's Market on Main Street in Newfane, adding a second Tops store to the Newfane area.

Budwey's will close on July 27, with Tops reopening the store on Aug. 9. Tops will be offering the option of continued employment to the 74 employees who currently work at Budwey's, said Katie McKenna, communications/public relations director at Tops.

"We anticipate that existing employees will continue employment with Tops," she said. "We anticipate offering employment to those associates."

While there is also Tops Market located at 3949 Lockport-Olcott Road, both stores will remain open, McKenna said.

"It's a natural extension of our customer base," she said.

The sale of the store is expected to close on Aug. 4. The 22,000-square-foot store will see minor changes after that date, including new signage, decor and the introduction of Tops brand products on the shelves.

Frank Budwey, the owner of Budwey's Market, said Tops made him an offer he "couldn't refuse" when they proposed to buy the store. Selling the store will allow Budwey's management to focus more attention on the company's store in North Tonawanda, he said.

"It’s been great having a business in the Newfane community, we loved our little store in the country and my sister Jennifer Schumacher and I will miss everyone," he said in a news release. "We discovered all of the great amenities that this area of Niagara County has to offer, and we will continue to support it.”

The move is good for everyone involved, said Town of Newfane Supervisor Timothy Horanburg.

"Newfane was good for Frank and Frank was good for us," he said.

The important thing, Horanburg said, is that the jobs stay in Newfane.

"Our big concern is that the store stays here," he said, adding that both locations will remain in the Newfane area. "I think they'll both do well."

Starting on July 13, the Budwey's Market in Newfane will be holding a 20 percent off sale. Customers with gift cards or reward points after the closing date will be able to redeem them at the store's North Tonawanda location.
