Tonawanda News — The Lumber City Development Corp. and North Tonawanda Community Development Director Richard Tindell will step down from his position effective June 14 to retire.

Officials said under his charge both entities thrived, with more than $1 million in federal and state grant money brought into the city in just under two years.

Tindell, 61, who has a background in planning and development, said he made the decision to retire very recently.

"I just reached that time in my working life that I want to back away from working full time and possibly do something part time," he said.

Mayor Rob Ortt first announced Tindell's decision on Thursday, stating that he had served in his position since August 2012, replacing his predecessor Jim Sullivan.

"I would like to thank Richard for his service on behalf of the residents of North Tonawanda," Ortt said, through a statement. "Richard took over the community development office at a critical time.  He has been an able administrator and has positioned the department for continued success.  The Common Council and I wish him well in his retirement."

Tindell spent the bulk of his career working as the director of planning and development in Wyoming County, but also led the Erie County Cornell Cooperative Extension as its director. He also spent time with the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper before accepting his current position in North Tonawanda.

Tindell credited part of his success in the Lumber City to his colleague Michael Zimmerman, the outfit's planning and development coordinator.

"We worked pretty closely as a team and I want to make sure his contributions are recognized," Tindell said, adding that in his short tenure with the city he was proud of his own accomplishments. "I don't think there is one project that really sticks out because they're all important. Hopefully they provide a great benefit to the community."

Ortt said a search for Tindell's replacement will commence immediately.
