Chamber honors citizen, business of the year

Tonawanda News — The Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas honored its Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year at its 75th annual dinner and meeting at Banchetti by Rizzo’s Restaurant in Amherst Wednesday night.

Beverly Loxterman was presented the Chamber’s 2013 Citizen of the Year award by Sandra McFarland. Rich Finiki presented the 2013 Business of the Year award to Crazy Jakes which was accepted by owner Greg Doel.

Crazy Jakes is a restaurant and bar located at 26 Webster St., North Tonawanda. Crazy Jakes features events, banquets and live music during the week.

“This very successful business is celebrating its five-year anniversary and has consistently expanded to include an outdoor patio, additional banquet facilities and catering services adding employment opportunity,” said Joyce Santiago, executive director of the chamber.

“In the process the restaurant acts as a catalyst for further business and improvement in the downtown area,” she added.

Crazy Jakes has also helped out several local causes including the Boys & Girls Club, Twin Cities Community Outreach, and the YWCA Tonawandas.

Loxterman, of North Tonawanda, was honored for her dedication to many organizations throughout the community including the YWCA Tonawandas, Zonta Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

She is a 16-year member on the North Tonawanda Waterfront Commission, with 10 years as chairperson. She has been a Big Brother/Big Sister for six years, serves as a Gateway Harbor board member and volunteer, and is one of the original founders of the Niagara County Rape Task Force.

“Beverly Loxterman has also opened her home to more than 20 children as a foster parent,” Santiago said. 

Past Citizen of the Year Cindy Burkett spoke at the dinner and annual meeting, and past-president Nancy Schmidt presided over the installation of new directors.

Cindy Burkett was installed as the new president for the 2013-14 year.
