Former North Tonawanda mayor dies

Tonawanda News — Mary Kabasakalian, former mayor of North Tonawanda, died Thursday at  Northgate Manor, North Tonawanda.

Kabasakalian, who served as mayor from 2000 to 2002, was known for her personality, her commitment to her mayoral platform, “We the People” and for her random acts of kindness.

One of the founders and treasurer of the North Tonawanda City Employees Credit Union, Kabasakalian was a driving force for procuring the Erie County Rescue Helicopter after her son, David, drowned in the Niagara River in 1987.

Because of her actions, many people have been rescued or found.

Friends will be received by the family from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Brunner Funeral Home, North Tonawanda. A memorial Mass will take place at a later date.
