Peter M. Magaris, age 73, of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, after a long illness. Born in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Peter and Mildred (nee Smilinich) Magaris and had been a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Peter had worked at the General Motors Engine Plant for 44 years until retiring in 2005, and was then employed at Enterprise Rental Car before becoming ill. He was an avid baseball umpire and bowler, New York Yankees fan, and fan of all WNY sports teams. He was a member of the Serbian Club, where he had served as Treasurer, a 55-year member of the Eldredge Club, a member of Salem United Church of Christ, and the American Legion Tonawandas Post No. 264.
He is survived by his two daughters, Dawn (James) Malum and Dana (Martin) Klimm; his son, Dean (Carrie Wilkins) Magaris; a sister, Ann Marie (Gary) Shugg; a brother, Larry (Monica) Magaris; and his companion, Dorine Jensen. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-8 PM on Friday at the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 37 Adam Street at Seymour, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 10 AM Saturday. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to the Make-a-Wish Foundation are preferred by the family.
