Eleanor E. Dera

NORTH TONAWANDA —

Eleanor E. Dera, 95, of North Tonawanda, NY (formerly of Niagara Falls, NY) entered into rest on Friday, July 11, 2014, under Hospice care at DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda, NY, after a brief illness. Eleanor was born on April 12, 1919, in Niagara Falls, NY, to the late Anthony J. and Mary (Kozubal) Pykosz.
Eleanor was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's School of Nursing in Niagara Falls, NY and served as a registered nurse in the obstetric department of the original Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Niagara Falls, NY. During World War II, she volunteered for service in the Army Nurse Corps and in 1943 was assigned as a Second Lieutenant to the U.S. Army Newfoundland Base Command, Canada. After the war, she married and raised a family in Niagara Falls, later moving to North Tonawanda.
She is survived by her son, David of North Tonawanda; granddaughters, Lorelle Gromus and Michelle Kolacz, both of North Tonawanda; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Gromus of Buffalo, NY and Matthew Gromus, Jesstin and Madison Kolacz, all of North Tonawanda; great-great-grandson, Lucian Gromus of Buffalo, NY. Also survived by her sister, Cecilia Jasen of Amherst, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William Dera; her beloved daughter, Lorraine Lepkowski; and siblings, John, Edwin Pykosz and Dorothy Synor.
Friends may call on Monday, July 14th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC., 319-24th St., Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, July 15th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Divine Mercy Parish 24th and Niagara Sts. with Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Holy Trinity Cemetery Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Our Lady of Angels Association, Niagara University, NY 14109.
