CITY OF TONAWANDA —
William J. Hurley, age 84, of the City of Tonawanda, Wednesday, June 18, 2014. A resident of Tonawanda for more than 45 years, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Margaret Hurley and was the brother of the late Robert and David Hurley. Bill was a 1948 graduate of Canisius High School and was a graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College, receiving his Bachelors in Secondary Education and Masters in School Administration. He began teaching in 1953 both Social Studies and Mathematics at Central School and also Tonawanda High School before becoming Principal at Fletcher Elementary School in 1956 serving for 25 years an also Mullen Elementary School for 3 years, retiring in 1985. He was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, where he served as an usher, administrator of the CCD Program and a volunteer with their Parish Outreach Program. He was also a member of the National Hose Co. and the Tonawanda Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Assn. Following his retirement, Bill and his wife, Peggy, loved to travel throughout the United States and Europe. They especially liked Italy, where they were fortunate enough to have a private audience with Pope John Paul II in 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marguerite "Peggy" (nee Buscani) Hurley; five children, Dawn M. (Joseph) Riggie of Kenmore, William J. (Paula) Hurley of Schroon Lake, NY, Christopher J. (Karen) Hurley of Getzville, Kevin J. (Margaret) Hurley of Fairport, NY and Patrick J. (Michelle) Hurley of East Amherst; fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret (the late Franklin) Boehler of East Amherst and Sally Hurley of the Town of Tonawanda; and a sister-in-law, Lucille (the late Robert Hurley) Rowley of Tonawanda. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Saturday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Inc., 25 William St. (between Morgan & Broad Sts.) in Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday (June 23rd) at 10 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 150 Broad St. in Tonawanda. Friends invited. The Rev. Msgr Richard Wetter will officiate. A private entombment will be in St. Francis Chapel Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Outreach Program.
