NORTH TONAWANDA —
H. Donald Peters, age 84, of North Tonawanda, went home to be with his Lord, Thursday, February 6, 2014 in Northgate Nursing Home. He was born July 31, 1929 in Madera, PA. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Mosley) Peters. Mr. Peters graduated from Bigler Township High School in 1947 in Madera, PA. He came to the Niagara Falls area where he started working at The Carborundum Company. After working there a year, he joined the United States Navy. He served his country during the Korean War (1948-1952). He served aboard a cargo ship out of Sasebo, Japan. His medals were Good Conduct, United Nations and Korean Service with one star. When Mr. Peters returned from serving his country, he again worked at The Carborundum Company (Coated Abrasives Division), and retired with over 33 years of service. He served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at First Baptist Church for many years as Church Treasurer, Trustee and many years as a Deacon.
He created a booklet for the 50th High School Reunion of his class at Bigler Township High School. He also was an avid sports fan, especially of baseball, which he enjoyed the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. He gave his children this great love of the game, and two of his children played Little League baseball of which Don enjoyed watching many of their games. After his retirement, he became an avid golfer, walking the 18 holes at Deerwood Golf Course in North Tonawanda five days a week (weather permitting). He also shot two holes-in-one on the Deerwood Course. Mr. Peters was a collector of sports and patriotic memorabilia (this included sports stadium replicas and eagles holding the American flag).
Survivors include his dear wife, Dorothy, who he married in 1953. Also surviving are four children and nine grandchildren: Russell (Lisa) and Tyler (Kerry) and Jolie (Robert) Valentine; Randall (Lisa) and Katie and Kristyn; Paul (Carole) and Drew, Adam and Alaina; and Rebecca (Randy) Stutzman and Sean and Brianna, and great-granddaughter of Rory Peters. He was the brother of the late Robert (Betty) and James (Patricia) Peters, and Dorothy (James) Helsel, Hazel (John) Beck, Ann (Edward) Smith, Ruth (Jesse) Smeal and William and Elizabeth. He is survived by a sister, Florence (Francis) Cummings and a brother, John (Beverly) Peters and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd., in North Tonawanda on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 AM. The Rev. Brad Delp will officiate. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Elm and Carlton Sts., Buffalo, NY 14263.
