Joseph Aiello

NORTH TONAWANDA — Joseph Aiello, 94, of North Tonawanda, Sunday (April 27,  2014). Mr. Aiello was born in Palermo, Sicily, on May 22, 1919 to Salvatore and Maria (Ingrassia) Aiello.

Joseph came to the United States at the age of 18 months. He attended Canisius College and University of Buffalo. He was a Golden Glove Champion for three straight years in 1937, 38, and 39, Welter Weight.

Joseph retired from Bell Aircraft after 43 years of service. He was the President of the union, UAW 501, UAW/AFL 1286 for 40 years. Joseph was also the security guard for President Kennedy when he visited Bell. He was the president of Bell Aircraft Bowling League, an Auxiliary Policeman for 30 years for Buffalo and North Tonawanda, and worked as a Designing Engineer. In his spare time he was an avid smelt catcher and hunter.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife, Angela (Caputy) Aiello; daughter, Maria Mayes; grandson, Marchello Aiello; sister, Rose (Sam) Merlo; brother, Frank (Mary) Aiello.

Joseph is survived by his children, Joseph S. (Karen) Aiello, Rosann (Richard) Schweickhard, Lawrence J., Michealina (Richard) Desimone. Grandfather of eight, great-grandfather of 10. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Wattengel Funeral Home, 533     Meadow Drive (NEW LOCATION), North Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 9:30 AM from Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 64 Center Ave., North Tonawanda. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
