Anthony E. "Tony" Franc


Anthony E. "Tony" Franc, age 89, from the City of Tonawanda, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Crestwood Skilled Nursing Facility in Wheatfield after a long illness. He was born on June 30, 1924 to Frank and Helen (nee Polek) Franc. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Aimee Jean Franc, from Liverpool, NY; and his two sisters, Frances Whitehead and Rosie Franc, both of North Tonawanda. He is survived by his four children, Gary Franc (wife, Jaci; son, Derek; daughter, Ashley), Liverpool, NY, Cheryl Epp (husband, Jim; and sons, Jacob and Lucas), East Amherst, NY, James Franc, North Tonawanda, NY, Robin Chilton (husband, Jim; and daughters, Alison and Abigail), North Tonawanda, NY; and many nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Jean Feminino.
Tony enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He worked as a Social Studies teacher and basketball coach at Niagara-Wheatfield High School retiring in 1986. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, during WWII, as a supply clerk in the 33rd Medical Depot Company. He was a well-known billiard player, athlete and sports enthusiast and was honored to be inducted into the North Tonawanda Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.  Tony was a standout basketball player in his youth and was an outstanding baseball player and reached the Triple A level in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He was a life-time member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in North Tonawanda.
The family will be present to receive family and friends on Sunday, May 11, 2014 from 4-8 PM at the Colucci Funeral Home, 652 Oliver St. at Fifth Ave., North Tonawanda (692-4917). Relatives and friends please assemble at church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, 626 Oliver Street. Entombment service will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Tonawanda. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Tony's memory to Alzheimer's Association at Alzheimer's Association WNY Chapter, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221.
