AMHERST — James A. Coogan, age 73, of the Tonawandas, Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, following a long illness. A resident of the City of Tonawanda for the greater part of his life, Jim served two terms as Second Ward Alderman for the City of Tonawanda from 1980 until 1983. He was appointed Tonawanda City Clerk in 1984 and served for 10 years until 1993. He was also a member of the Erie County Clerks Assn. He was a longtime member and Vice Chairman of the Tonawanda Democratic City Committee and a member of St. Andrew RC Church.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann (nee Nowotarski) Coogan; three children, Douglas J. Coogan of St. Petersburg, FL, Kathy M. Coogan of Tonawanda, and Gregory A. (Angela) Coogan of Turnersville, NJ; his granddaughter, Mary Clare Coogan and was the husband of the late Helen J. (nee Cox) Coogan. Also survived by sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call today (Tuesday, Jan. 8th) from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Inc., 25 William St. (between Morgan & Broad Sts.), in Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:15 AM in St. Andrew RC Church, 1525 Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited. A private entombment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial contributions are preferred to Hospice Buffalo, Inc., 225 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14227.
