Lewis C. Jeckovich

NIAGARA FALLS — Lewis C. Jeckovich, of Niagara Falls, died on Friday, November 11, 2011, at his home. He was 84. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on June 27, 1927, a son of the late Marijan and Anna (Targos) Jeckovich. He attended local schools including Niagara Falls High School.

Mr. Jeckovich, a veteran newsman of 31 years, served in three branches of the Armed Forces.  He received the Navy Occupation WW II Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal; China Service National Defense Medal; USAFR Meritorious Service Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; American Campaign Medal; WWII Victory Medal; Armed Forces Reserve USAF Medal; Armed Forces Reserve USN Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

During WWII, he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and served aboard a destroyer escort in the Pacific area, which took part in the Japanese surrender ceremonies in Northern Hanchu. He later joined the U.S. Navy and served 10 years active duty at the former Niagara Falls Naval Air Reserve Station as editor of the base newspaper. 

Honorably discharged in 1959, he was employed as a staff reporter-editor for the Tonawanda News, a post he held for 31 years, until his retirement in 1990. In 1967, he joined the 914th Air Force Reserve  at the Niagara Falls Air Base where he was a member of the base public relations staff. He was also editor of the base newspaper which earned several nationwide awards and served as group historian.

An avid photographer, he never missed a photo opportunity with his beloved grandchildren at their recitals and sporting events.

He was predeceased by his wife, Adeline (Banas) Jeckovich in 2003.  They were married June 11, 1955 and raised four children, Jeffrey J. (Lynne), James L. (Diana), Cynthia (Patrick) Travers and Lewis J., all of Niagara Falls; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey L., Kristen, Lauren, Michael, Melissa and Sara Jeckovich; Shayne, Carly and Jack Travers; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Jeckovich; two brothers, Stephen (Catherine) Jeckovich of California, John (Delphine) Jeckovich of Florida; and a sister, Sally Downie of Niagara Falls; sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Marilyn Banas and several nieces and nephews. He was  also predeceased by sisters-in-law, Mildred Jeckovich, Delores Banas and brothers-in- law, Charles Downie and John and Richard Banas.

Friends may call Monday from 4-8 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, where prayers will be said Tuesday 12 noon, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 in St. John de LaSalle RC Church with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society,  101 John James Audubon Parkway, Amherst 14228, or to the American Diabetes Association, 315 Alberta Drive, Amherst, NY 14226.
