SOUND OFF: Published July 13

The Tonawanda News

Everyone has time to write Sound Off about the NT schools but no one votes in the school board election. I went and I voted. The problem is the only people I saw voting work for the NT school district. Nothing will change if no one other than teachers vote.

•••

Since Congress failed to vote against the war in Iraq when it happened, I hope you can make amends by voting for H.R. 676 and take the first step to get health care for all Americans regardless of age, race, sexuality or gender.

•••

In America, it is important that we seek ways to make our election process as reliable and honest as possible. This will help to take an element of fraud out of the process. Please vote to ban touch screen terminals that do not have paper back up for verification.

•••

It's so sad that in the U.S., a country whose government claims to be the best in the world, is failing so miserably in the area of health care. It's abhorrent how much some people in this country suffer due to the state of our health care system, and something needs to be done about it! Passing H.R. 676 would certainly make sense.

•••

Hey, overpaid factory worker, your days are numbered. Too bad you can't be a fly on the wall in a classroom and watch what goes on. You would never be able to put up with the actions of some of these kids. My bet is you'd make a fool out of yourself like you do every time you feel the need to bash teachers.

The Pope is setting the Christian community back 50 years.

•••

I can’t believe state Sen. George Maziarz’s reason for voting to make Buffalo the terminus of the canal. It’s good for the region? How about what’s good for Tonawanda? If you look at the current map of the Erie Canal you can see that the Erie Canal ends in the Tonawandas. You’d have to use the Niagara River to get it to Buffalo. Who cares if it’s historically accurate? We are talking about 2007, not the 1800s. You let North Tonawanda down, senator. Shame on you.

•••

I am an avid bicyclist in North Tonawanda, and yes, I do not stop for stop signs when I am on my bike. And the number one reason is to force cars to stop at stop signs. When I go through the intersection, they’re either going to stop or hit me. When was the last time you saw a car in North Tonawanda stop for a stop sign?

•••

Hey, Sen. George Maziarz, I can’t believe that you say, “it amazes me that not one of them contacted about me about that concern.” It’s your job as state senator to let people know locally, whether its the citizens or public officials, the legislation that affects them. For you to vote for the terminus to be moved from Tonawanda to Buffalo is ridiculous. You should be ashamed of yourself.

•••

I’m just reading that our new city treasurer in North Tonawanda would like to charge a 2.5 percent user fee on paying taxes and bills online. I feel that this is an extremely unnecessary charge. It’s no wonder people are leaving the area.

•••

Am I the only parent in North Tonawanda who is completely aggravated that every single event either going on at Canal Fest or going on with the city’s youth board is going on during the day? I’m a working parent, and at night would be a whole lot more convenient for me, rather than having to take a day off during the day so I can do an event with my child. I am sick and tired of activities being held during the day for kids and not some activities being held at night.

•••

I think it’s great that I see North Tonawanda is moving to online electronic payments. But at 2.5 percent premium, I will still continue to mail my check three days before the payment is due. Sorry, North Tonawanda, it’s not going to work out.
