SOUND OFF: Published November 26

The Tonawanda News

If government was the same as business, the government would have been out of business a long time ago. Apparently we’re seeing that starting to occur now at all levels. Apparently they spend more than they have and we as the consumers don’t have that much to give them for their services. Therefore, they have less coming in and more going out, which means they’ll go out of business.

A friend of mine works at Walmart part time. Her husband’s schedule at work was changed. It meant that she could no longer have dinner with her husband. Her boss at Walmart heard her story from her coworkers and came to her and offered to change her schedule. That doesn’t sound like the Walmart we hear about all the time. There apparently are two sides to every story.

•••

In response to the complaint about the $1.4 billion national deficit and 10.2 percent unemployment rate. We should thank President Obama for the great job he’s doing to correct all the problems caused by George Bush and all his advisors. If he were still in office, those numbers would be higher.

•••

How can the private sector be creating jobs when it’s being taxed to death and forced to give its employees health care? Plus, where is the market to sell its product when you have China, India and Mexico and everyone else under-bidding us on everything? We don’t’ sell anything to these countries, they’re too busy sending everything here. There’s hardly any industry here. How is the president going to create jobs here? Except for building roads and installing utilities.

•••

I tried to call North Tonawanda city hall using the brand new Verizon phone books that were delivered to my house. I got a message saying the number’s not in service, please check the number and redial. I’ve tried this several times with both phone books and it’s the same number, same result. Either Verizon doesn’t know city hall’s phone number, or city hall gave them a bad number.

•••

I have to turn off my TV when I hear Americans talk about the condition that America is in. Who did it? Your ex-president Bush. He caused this disaster and he’s living in his million-dollar home.

•••

I don’t care whether Walmart comes to the city but anyone who believes that our streets are going to be paved with gold and we’ll all have money in our pockets if they do build it, you’re sorely mistaken. Better look at their record. They are a private business looking to make profits for themselves.

•••

Maybe we could remind immigrants who come to our country, they should come to assimilate, not just come for what they can get. This is the land of opportunity and these people are already getting subsidized rentals, earned income credits, homes, and now they want free health care. The least they could do is assimilate. They didn’t come here just to take. This has nothing to do with prejudice or race, it has to do with common respect for the country you’re in.

•••

Just because I didn’t choose to become a teacher doesn’t mean I should have to pay your outrageous wages and benefits.
