Tonawanda News — I know it is ill-advised to start listing people of importance — because someone is always left out — but my attempt here will hopefully not offend anyone. Let me start with Steve Denn, the long-standing director of the tournament. His father, the late Tom Denn, Porter Cup emeritus, Mike Vitch, Deanna Armstrong, Craig Avery, Brian Oakley, John Boss and his golf staff all deserve a tip of the hat. The many volunteers and staffers at the Niagara Falls Country Club play an integral part of the success of these events. And last, but certainly not least, has been Khlar Holthouse and his grounds crew. Over the years, we have played in rain, wind and flooding conditions. The grounds crew has worked tirelessly to get the course in condition to play, sometimes with very little time and with a lot of great effort!
My last pitch is to the folks of Western New York: if you have not attended any rounds of the Porter Cup, put it on your to-do list. If is free to attend (just a nominal fee to park) and you can enjoy watching future pro golfers — now both men and women — hone their craft.
