The Tonawanda News

City of Tonawanda

— LARCENY: Police charged a 46-year-old city woman Sunday for allegedly ripping off a customer at the Dollar Tree store on Niagara Street. A North Tonawanda man called police after suspecting the cashier of wrong doing. The customer’s order totaled $108, $68 of which he charged to his debit card. He then gave the cashier $40 for the balance and saw her put the money in her pocket.

Police charged Denise A. Hurley, of 194 E. Niagara St. Apt. 3, with petit larceny. Hurley allegedly told police the shopper bought $68 in items, but police counted 89 $1 products, according to the report.

Hurley allegedly rang up a $40 cash sale on a different register 20 minutes after the man’s debit card purchase and put $40 from her purse into the register, then went outside and gave the customer a receipt for a $40 cash sale.

When asked by police why she put her own money into the register, Hurley said there were computer problems with the register and that it was easier to fix the problem by giving the store her own money.

Hurley, who was an assistant manager, was fired. She was released on an appearance ticket.

School officials contacted police after determining that the three women charged allowed their children to miss too many classes. “It was really excessive, to the point where I don’t even know if these kids are going to be able to advance to the next grade,” Lt. Fredric Foels said.
