Tonawanda News — Cory Conacher scored two goals, including his first in a Sabres uniform, as Buffalo downed the Edmonton Oilers late Thursday, 3-1, at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
Meanwhile, goalie Matt Hackett stopped 35 shots to get his first win as a Sabre.
After Taylor Hall scored his 24th goal of the season to put the Oilers in the lead late in the first period, Cory Conacher scored at the 9:15 mark of the second period when he tipped a Jamie McBain shot past Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens.
Conacher struck again just 1:09 into the third period with what proved to be the game-winning goal, again a tip-in, this time off a shot by Cody Hodgson. About three and a half minutes later, Drew Stafford netted his 15th goal of the season with a snap shot at the 4:44 mark. Conacher got an assist, as did Tyler Ennis.
Hackett is the fifth goalie to see game action this season for the Sabres, who after trading Ryan Miller have momentarily lost Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth to injuries. Rookie Nathan Lieuwen was also called up for the Sabres’ current west coast swing and played in the team’s loss Tuesday in Calgary.
