Two world hockey tourneys coming to Buffalo

Tonawanda News — Buffalo's HARBORCENTER, the mixed-use facility next to First Niagara Center that is scheduled to open this fall, will play host to two international hockey tournaments in early 2015, USA Hockey and the Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday.

The eighth annual International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Under-18 Women's World Championship is first, taking place at HARBORCENTER from January 4 to 12. Then, from April 24 to May 2, the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship will be played on the rinks contained within the downtown Buffalo building being constructed by the Sabres.

The IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship will feature teams from the United States, Canada, Czech Republic and Russia in Group A while Finland, Sweden, Japan and Switzerland make up Group B. Team USA has appeared in all seven gold medal games since the tournament's debut, winning three times, in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

The IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship will be staged also for the eighth time next spring. The USA has won gold at the tournament twice, in 2009 and 2012.
