It doesn’t take a genius to realize that every time the state raises up taxes for regular stores, and for regular brand cigarettes that you have to buy at 7-11, Convenient, or whatever, the cost goes up. But then, the reservation just raises up the price of their cigarettes, and it just puts more profit in their pockets. Government, wake up! All you’re doing is making the Indians richer. So, I feel that they should be paying taxes on cigarettes.

I am perplexed by people complaining about prayer not allowed in schools. We live in a free country in which anyone can pray anytime they want to. Unless the people complaining are actually just upset with the fact that prayer isn’t forced upon everyone in school. When religion ruled the world, we called it the Dark Ages.

Is the Meadow Drive extension ever going to happen?

Do the school board and teachers of North Tonawanda realize that the unemployment rate in Niagara County is more than 10 percent? Apparently not. And what is this quote from our superintendent: “It will continue to ensure that our students are provided with a first-rate education.” Does that mean if teachers are not paid continually more and more money, they are not going to continue to educate our children? I think not, but that’s the problem with education: Just throw more money at the teachers and things are supposed to get better.

New York State wants to impose new license plates for all vehicles with a rate hike. If you would like to protest and stop New York state rip-offs, sign the petition at nonewplates.com or call your legislator or assemblyman’s office.

I can’t believe the dirty politics in NT. To help their mayoral candidate, the Republicans undermine Walmart to hurt Mayor Soos. Guess what? We the residents are getting hurt! Why do we put up with this?

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 29
NT has a beautiful Memorial Park on Payne Avenue. Why doesn't the city pave a section of the park for young skateboard enthusiasts? Parks are for all the people to use and enjoy. Let's have a section of the park for teens, too. I am sure that the city has insurance already for users of Memorial Pool.

If the taxpayers of North Tonawanda actually "won" this wetlands lawsuit, after spending years and millions to do so, it could impact every wetland in the state.

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 27
I cannot believe the candidates for mayor. Larry Soos says he is going to do something about code enforcement and his department heads and then doesn't do anything. Then I get a phone call from a friend of the mayor, asking if I have any concerns about the city that the mayor should know about. Also meeting with Rob Ortt, he said he will look into the codes that are violated in the city and he would get back to me the next day, well it has now been going on two weeks. There are many big time violations in this city, but it is in all of who you know to get things taken care of.

Why doesn’t some of the money raised at the 100th anniversary of the T-NT game go towards the sports program at school? I’d like to know that.

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 23
T-NT week is a week to be celebrated! It was chock full of activities of all kinds. Did anyone notice that the superintendent of North Tonawanda schools was absent from it all! Vecchiarella could not find the time to celebrate a tradition of the district he runs? How dare he have so little regard for the students and our community! This community has tolerated a lot from this man, only to be completely snubbed. His contract is done in September. It better not be renewed or extended.

So many people are happy that so many streets are being paved, taxes lowered, a whole lot of good things going on in North Tonawanda. That’s great but it’s an election year. Duh! We’ll all be paying for this next year. Wait and see.

Prisoner escapes from the Tonawanda police station and the spokesman is a detective. Once again, where is the chief's comments?

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 15
I live in the Christiana Street area near Spruce School and I’m asking if anyone has seen my lost dog. It’s a 2-year-old male miniature sized poodle with a green collar. If anybody has seen him, please just call the police station. I’ve already notified them. Thank you.

A lobotomy is cost effective? Sex offenders are a serious problem, I wasn't denying that. I have zero-tolerence for that; however, I think your mentality is going to destroy our country. Guard your children, of course. But at the same time, you can’t just teach them hate and punishment.

Another council meeting and another appearance by the “mayor’s assistant.” Where has the mayor been? Why do we always have the assistant? Does the mayor ever speak for himself?

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 9
I’m a Leah Drive resident and every year at this time these football players — actually it’s their family members who drive them — think they own our road. They think they can park any place they want on Sundays, they think they can block our driveways, can turn around in our driveways. They think they can drive like animals and speed around. They think they can do whatever they want. I’m going to start giving the police their plate numbers. This neighborhood is getting sick of this. Why don’t you stick around and watch your kid play, instead of speeding away?

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 8
So, someone wants to build a group home in North Tonawanda for “troubled youth?” Are they kidding? My family had firsthand experience living near some of these so-called “troubled youth.” It wasn’t pleasant. Do you realize that these kids will be coming from all over? A lot of them are no strangers to the police. The only reason some of these kids aren’t in jail is because of their ages. How are they going to mix veteran’s housing with this kind of thing?

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 7
I hope a certain man got thrown out of NT. Or better yet, thrown in jail. I could not believe the Riviera let this show happen! Why did no one close the curtains on the show Saturday night? That was NOT “entertainment.”

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 6
I have a proposal for saving money in NT. Let’s lay off some workers in the DPW. The abuse that goes on in that department is unbelievable. That’s why people are seeing trucks parked all over the place, taking breaks constantly.

Why not repair the railroad crossing on Walck Road between Zimmerman and Nash? Also, do something about that eyesore of a house on Robinson and Zimmerman, and replace the barrier at the end of Service Drive that was thrown in the weeds almost two years ago.

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 2
Speaking of NT garbage, it would be nice if they enforced the rule that “Empty receptacles must be removed from the curb within 12 hours after collection.” On my street there seems to always be either the green or the blue or both totes at the curb all week and it’s been going on for years.

  • SOUND OFF: Published October 1
What’s with the DPW of North Tonawanda? I’ve got a pile of branches on my street, here on Pierce Ave. Been there for a couple weeks now. I called up, and they still didn’t show up to pick it up. It looks like a mess out here. Where did my tax money go?

  • SOUND OFF: Published Sept. 30
I too get sick and tired of seeing other places get money, but the City of Tonawanda never gets anything. I’m sure if someone left some money on the steps of City Hall it would end up getting lost anyway.

  • SOUND OFF: Published Sept. 29
Who gives permission for parking in the city parking lot behind the Golden H Center? There’s been a motor home there for more than a month. Who gets special privileges without getting a ticket? I had a friend who visited and they got a ticket.

  • SOUND OFF: Published Sept. 27
I just want to say what a great job DPW did following Labor Day. Tuesday they came and they cleaned up Elmwood Avenue very well. Everybody

  • SOUND OFF: Published Sept. 26
I was just wondering since when does North Tonawanda have big garbage pick-up weekly? I was informed when I first bought my house that the things I put out needed to be taken away from the curb till big garbage day or pay the city an additional $75. I have noticed that people in my area have had garbage out for weeks and they have not been left notes to have the things moved and it’s making the city look like it’s the slums. This is done in the area every month and nothing is ever done.
