SOUND OFF: Published April 30
The Tonawanda News
Too many complaints and too much negativity in this city including most of the Sound Offs. I would like to compliment the mayor and several of his committees that organized the cleaning of our parks last weekend. Almost 100 volunteers showed up including Mayor Soos and worked for several hours at Pinewood Park, Mayor's Park and along the canal. The parks look wonderful. I sincerely want to thank the committee people and everyone involved in this great, positive event for NT.

It’s about time action was taken with the owner of a boathouse on Ellicott Creek Road, and days in jail may be just what this guy needs to prove this is not a game. Other owners of dilapidated property in the City of Tonawanda should take note. Oil-leaking vehicles, large piles of unstacked firewood, unfinished siding and fencing for a garage door will no longer be tolerated in our town. Let’s see how many of the seven day sentences the owner serves. I bet less than half.

In regards to the teachers in NT ... whomever you are that writes about teachers should get their facts straight first before publishing lies. Are you telling me that a teacher cannot go on a vacation? What about the parents pulling students out before or after a holiday? And how do you know that consequences were not paid for in regards to leaving the building? Choosing a job is not an easy one and neither is teaching when lies and gossip spread so easily.

Much ado has been made about Hillary Clinton’s likability and “trust worthiness” as a candidate. Do we need to look any further than her promise to create 200,000 new jobs in Western New York and revitalize the economy in the area? The net result of that promise equals a loss of 30,000 jobs over the last 8 years. Hillary’s lame excuse that she expected Gore to win the presidency in 2000, and that she would work with him to accomplish this, doesn't merit anything but ridicule and underlines the scorn she shows for her constituents. Hillary as a senator in New York state is bad enough. Electing her as president would be a disaster!

I am calling about the gas prices. President Bush has given us this so-called rebate, some people get it and some people don’t. If he thinks this is going to help, I don’t think so, because gas and food prices are going up. We just can’t afford this anymore and somebody has to do something about it. Certainly this rebate he is talking about is not helping at all, if we even get one.

I was reading the paper tonight about the streets in North Tonawanda that are terrible, and Sweeney Street is pitiful. I live on Roberts Drive, which isn’t that bad, but boy, Sweeney is terrible. You know what a driver should do? If he hits one of those holes and it damages their car, the city is responsible. I have been here all my life and have never seen the town like it is. But I really wish somebody would take care of that situation. Sweeney Street is a long street and 80 percent of it is holes.

Now the city wants to go into business? This is totally wrong. My tax dollars? I thought the mayor’s job was to bring business into the city, not go into business. How do I get this job? This has to get some good benefits. Please let us taxpayers know where to go for interviews.

You know, now that we have a recession setting in, it seems like everybody is cutting back on everything in their everyday lives, except our New York state government. They just keep spending and spending and spending. When is it going to stop?
