SOUND OFF: Published October 15

The Tonawanda News

Another Sabres season and does anybody really have any hope this team is going to do anything? This is very depressing, we go into the fall and winter and our sports teams rip our hearts out.

•••

I’m reading the article about the new tax on power to make up the state’s shortfall. All the people who work at the Power Authority, especially the people in charge should all have to do like the people at General Motors and Delphi had to do, take a cut in pay and benefits and work like human beings. Not like CEOs who are overpaid, like they all are in New York state. They ought to make them take a cut in pay to keep the prices down. We pay more for power and it’s in our backyard. Let New York City put up windmills and solar panels instead of us supplying them with cheap power.

•••

I just want to say, on health care, thank you Sen. Charles E. Schumer, for going against the people. Your wanting to pass a health care plan that would hurt the elderly, that really sounds great. You, for one, know 56 percent of people don’t want the public option, but you want the public option? What is wrong with you? I don’t think you should be our senator anymore.

•••

I live in the Christiana Street area near Spruce School and I’m asking if anyone has seen my lost dog. It’s a 2-year-old male miniature sized poodle with a green collar. If anybody has seen him, please just call the police station. I’ve already notified them. Thank you.

•••

Believe me, my friend, Tonawanda cops harassing kids is nothing new. My son, who is now 26, was harassed constantly by the Tonawanda cops when he was 16 just for walking through BJs parking lot. The trouble with these guys is that they have nothing better to do in such a small city.

•••

I was talking to one of the members of the NT School Board about how the city treasurer did not collect the school taxes properly over the past 10 years and how the city taxpayers had to foot the bill. Even after an out of court settlement the school still has no idea whether or not the taxes are being collected. The treasurer is doing things the same way. How could this be? What happened to our school taxes that were never collected?

•••

Sometimes there’s a Sound Off and you can’t tell if it’s for NT or Tonawanda, like the one about the mayor’s assistant!

•••

My family and I attended the Ghostlight Theatre production of “Sleepy Hollow” on Saturday and we enjoyed it immensely. The acting, set design and direction were all top-notch. Everyone involved should be very proud of their efforts. What a treasure this theatre company is for our community!

•••

I want to express my dismay over the new teacher’s contract just passed by, I hope, the soon to be removed board of education. They got raises? I haven’t had a raise in two years and when I did, it was for only 2%! Too much money for too little results. We need to grow our tax base here in NT and that’s not going to happen if taxes keep climbing. And that’s what is going to happen as a result of this contract; don’t let anyone fool you by saying otherwise.

•••

As a former student and graduate of 1946 of Tonawanda High School, I hope that they continue the football games between Tonawanda and North Tonawanda high schools. It would be a shame to stop such a worthy meeting between the two schools.

•••

How does an owner of a bar get away with shooting off a loaded weapon inside the bar he owns.  The bullet was reported to go though a refrigerator, an outside wall into a neighboring building. So not only could this person have hurt or even killed one of his own customers but someone unknowing outside. What is the SLA, police or the city officials doing about this?
