Tonawanda News — Good to see that a woman was hired as assistant city attorney. Although, it had more to do with her connections to Senator Maziarz than the fact she was a woman or her equals. Too bad. Maybe she will get the free $15,000 uncalled for retirement incentive giveaway that Sondel received when he left. Something to look forward too for her.

Why should the handling and closure of St. Francis School be such a surprise? When Bishop Kmiec and Sister Regina Murphy announced the closing of Ascension Church and St. Joseph’s Church in North Tonawanda in 2007 as part of the “Journey in Faith & Grace,” as they called it, Sister Murphy was quoted in the newspapers as saying they were closing the churches because they were “in the inner city.”  They certainly had no idea where the City of North Tonawanda was — nor did they care. They did not listen to the recommendations of local Catholics on dummy committees that wasted so much time offering input to the diocese during that “Journey.”  Sister Regina was quoted as saying they, the diocese, had to “cater to lucrative suburbia.”  Then North Tonawanda Catholic School was closed as well. Next will be the closing of OLC church and St. Francis and then the diocese can totally ignore the Catholics in the two cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda, who obviously are not wealthy enough to be served by the Buffalo diocese.

I don’t believe Barbara Tucker was “bashing” the Catholic religion. She was referring to people going to the church to get a calendar who may think they won’t get one if they are not a member. You need to read between the lines.

So you are telling me when I see police doing 40-plus mph down Ruie Road and then turn into their driveway that’s OK? Are they sneaking up on their dinner or what? The point is they need to uphold the law themselves, as they were sworn into at the academy. And not to think they are above the law. And if it was a case of importance, why would we be drinking a coffee as we’re doing this? All I’m saying is follow the laws instead of breaking them. Because you are absolutely correct they are not special. At all!

Self-promotion is great isn’t it? I question the marina award being given by the American Public Works Association for an unfinished project? Just so happens that the design engineer for the project, CRA, is president of the AP Public Works committee. It is like giving yourself an award. Mayor Ortt’s comment is that this is the latest affirmation to everyone who said this project couldn’t happen. Well Mayor Ortt, I don’t remember hearing anyone say it couldn’t happen. I did hear that this project is a colossal waste of money.  $1.3 million spent of taxpayer money for this? Especially, the $350,000 plus in matching funds from the city. A marina? Give me a break. A promise kept. A ridiculous one at best.
