Local coaches say Seahawks did not handle the clock well

By Nate Beutel
Niagara Gazette

Niagara Falls, NY. Maybe the Seattle Seahawks didn’t deserve to win, but they certainly didn’t help themselves when they weren’t able to exercise clock management at the end of both halves.

Most local high school coaches agree and came away as baffled as some of us were while we watched Seattle score zero points on both occasions.

“I was a little surprised they didn’t do something to get some points,” Kenmore East football coach Matt Chimera said. “It’s hard to tell what they were thinking at that point.”

Starpoint coach Al Cavagnaro added: “Seattle certainly mismanaged their time like the announcers had said.”

When Niagara Catholic coach Don Marinucci was asked if the Seahawks had handled the clock correctly at the end of both halves, his simply responded, “No, they didn’t manage their time well — at all.”

Despite Seattle’s clock mismanagement, each coach felt the game lived up to its billing, whether it was the actual game or the interesting side stories.

“It was a great game. I was rooting for Pittsburgh so...,” Chimera said. “They (Pittsburgh) were a little down in the third quarter but they came right back in the fourth.”

Legendary Niagara Falls coach Joe Shifflet said he thought the game really came down to two big plays.

“It was a pretty good football game,” Shifflet said. “It was really two big plays that did it for Pittsburgh — the long run by Parker and the reverse pass for a touchdown.”

Marinucci said Pittsburgh took advantage of its opportunities and just deserved to win on Sunday.

“Seattle had their shots. They had some penalties and a few plays that killed them,” he said.

Cavagnaro played the sentimental card as he was happy to see “The Bus” (Jerome Bettis) retire as a champion.

“I was glad for Bettis. He’s been a class act his whole career.”

Whatever their feelings, Cavagnaro probably summed it up best for most fans when he said, “It was a good game to watch as a fan. It came down to the end.”

And isn’t that what we’re most worried about?
