HS TRACK: Purple Eagles sweep Newfane track Panthers

Yaple sprints home to Panthers victory in high hurdles.

Staff Reports

NEWFANE Defending Niagara-Orleans League champion Albion set the stage for a key battle of the unbeatens against Royalton-Hartland on Monday by defeating host Newfane, 83-58, in Thursday’s lone N-O boys meet.

Albion, which hosts Monday’s big meet against the Rams, improved to 3-0 in the league, while Roy-Hart is at 4-0. The loss dropped the Newfane boys to 2-2 in the N-O.

Meanwhile, Albion’s girls got back on the winning track by downing Newfane, 75-65, to improve to 2-1 in the N-O.

Morris Taylor was a triple winner in the 100, 200 and 400 and David Skrip doubled in the shot put and discus to lead the Albion boys.

The Purple Eagles also got wins from Travis Klossner (1,600), Seth Edwards (long jump), Mike Warren (high jump) and Marcus Taylor (triple jump).

Newfane got a double win effort from Adam Irr in the 800 and pole vault and out of four-year varsity member Jake Yaple in the 110 high hurdles and as a member of Newfane’s winning 400 relay. Yaple, a senior who plans to attend the University at Buffalo this fall to study exercise science, won the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.9 seconds.

Yaple has now won three out of the four hurdle finals he’s competed in this season.

“I’ve been trying to work on my form this year,” Yaple said. “Today, I felt I had a good three-step rhythm going.”

Other first-place finishers for the Newfane boys were Matt Kelkenberg (400 hurdles), Nick Pardee (3,200) and the Blue Zone’s 400 relay (Yaple, Ryan Linhart, Travis Guerriera and Adam Burdick).

Triple winner Alex Williams (100, 200, shot put) and double winner Hannah Moffett (800, 1,500) led the way for the Lady Purple Eagles, who also got first-place finishes from Robin Rosecrans (100 hurdles), Rebecca Powley (400), Kelsey Moffett (3000) and Chelsea Beecher (long jump).

Placing first for the Lady Panthers (1-3 N-O) were Jessica McCullum (400 hurdles), Ally Pierce (discus), Carrie Gow (high jump), Rebecca Roskoph (triple jump) and Molly Coakley (pole vault).

Earning relay wins for the Lady Panthers were the 400 relay team (Roskoph, Gow, Coakley and McCullum) and 1,600 relay team (Pierce, Amber Bonito, Tachaya Kruasophon and Jessica Vail).
