COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Lynch fails to qualify at Auburn

NIAGARA FALLS —Joel Welser of collegehoopsnet.com posted this entry in his 2007-08 Auburn University men’s basketball preview on Tuesday.
“… it is Tyrell Lynch who will play a more important role this year. If the 6-8 power forward can become a decent option off the bench, it will open up some possible lineup changes on the front line.”
Welser will now need to edit that preview.
Lynch, a former standout at Niagara Falls High School, did not qualify academically to enroll at Auburn, according to school officials.
“He wasn’t cleared by the NCAA,” Auburn spokesperson Chuck Gallina said via telephone. “He’s not in school.”
Sources tell the Gazette Lynch is currently still in the Cataract City weighing his options. He did not return phone calls seeking comment for this story.
After leading the Wolverines to the New York state Class AA championship in 2005 and the title game in his senior year, Lynch opted to attend prep school and work on both his grades and game.
After a short stint at The Patterson School, he wound up at the Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina and averaged 16 points and 10 boards last winter.
In an interview with the Gazette in July, Lynch said he had changed many of his bad habits and had matured a lot during his time down South.
