COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Dec. 2): NCCC women win overtime thriller
Staff reports
Sophomore Jeanette Dumais had a game-high 17 points and added 15 rebounds to lead the Niagara County Community College women’s basketball team to a come-from-behind 65-60 overtime win Tuesday against visiting Niagara (Ontario) College.
The Starpoint graduate hit a 3-pointer with just under a minute left in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra session, the Lady Trailblazers used their transition game to earn the win, their third in a row.
“We’re finally starting to come together as a team,” coach Jeremy Breeden said. “We just kept running and running and running and they couldn’t match our speed. I’m really excited right now.”
Also for NCCC (3-4 overall), Royalton-Hartland graduate Arlene Andrade had 12 points and a game-high 22 rebounds; Margo Pagano had 12 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and four assists; Taylor Pagano finished with 11 points and 10 boards and Kari Seabert (Wilson) chipped in eight points and 16 rebounds.
Brandy Szockyj had 16 points for Niagara (8-9), which blew a 12-point first-half lead.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara (Ontario) 87, NCCC 82
The Trailblazers saw their three-game win streak come to an end as Niagara’s B.J. Michaels knocked down seven 3-pointers for a game-high 23 points. The Knights overcame a five-point second-half deficit to improve to 14-3.
“Offensively, I don’t have any complaints, but we let a known shooter get off on the defensive end,” NCCC coach Frank Rotundo said. “It was a lack of experience and a lack of communicating.”
Niagara Catholic graduate Dyrell Dolson had 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Also for NCCC (3-4), Franklin Harris had 22 points, eight assists and six steals. Eric Johnson added 17 points on five 3-pointers, Queran Walker had 12 points and nine rebounds and Jeremiah Jones (Niagara Catholic) chipped in with six points and four boards.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UB fires Lodes
University at Buffalo athletics director Warde Manuel announced Tuesday that coach Jim Lodes will not have his contract renewed after four seasons on the job.
Lodes was 33-96 during his tenure, including just a 2-30 mark in the Mid-American Conference the past two seasons. A national search for a new head coach has begun.
