HS ROUNDUP (Jan. 9): Davis leads NT past Lew-Port in boys hoops

Aaron Davis tallied 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to lead the visiting North Tonawanda Lumberjacks to a 68-62 Niagara Frontier League win over the Lewiston-Porter Lancers on Friday night. NT got the win despite shooting 7-for-22 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Kevin Miller added 15 points and seven rebounds for NT (4-4 overall, 2-2 NFL), while Darrik Bloomfield scored a dozen. Robby Seyler scored 21 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter for Lew-Port (4-6, 1-3) and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Grand Island 57, Niagara-Wheatfield 48
Greg Feathers had 19 points and 11 rebounds as Grand Island continued to roll in NFL play.
Also for GI (8-0, 4-0) — which used a 15-4 third-quarter run to pull away — Jonas Stalyga had 11 points, 10 boards and six assists and Alex Neutz added 13 points. Carl Graff had a game-high 22 points for N-W (1-3). Dewan Seay added 14 points in the loss.
Wilson 63, Roy-Hart 54
Ethan Baker had 19 points and six rebounds to lead the Lakemen to the Niagara-Orleans League road win. Brennan Moxham added 12 points and five assists, while John Vincent had 11 points and eight boards and O’Dane Todd chipped in seven points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for Wilson (6-2 overall, 3-0 N-O). Tim Mullen led the Rams (1-6, 1-2) with 15 points.
Medina 47, Newfane 39
Levi Pace had 17 points to help the Mustangs pull away from Newfane in a key N-O contest. Adam Hellwig added nine for Medina (4-3 overall, 3-0 N-O), which outscored the Panthers 24-16 in the second half. Adam Bailey led the Panthers (1-3) with 17 points.
Albion 62, Barker 48
Justin Swanger had a game-high 18 points to spark the Purple Eagles to the N-O win. Brad Rush added 16 points for Albion (2-1 N-O). Rya Paul and Robert Adams each had 12 for the Raiders (1-3).
Akron 64, CSAT 49
J.C. Tretter had 21 points and 11 rebounds to help Akron improve to 2-1 in the N-O. Trevor Short added 19 points and Alec Short scored 12. CSAT fell to 0-3.
Timon 72, N. Catholic 62
A late charge from the Patriots wasn’t enough in Monsignor Martin action. Mike Volpe led NC (3-8 overall) with 16 points and Zach Evans added 14 in the loss. Justin Mitchell led Timon (7-3) with 24 points.
Girls Basketball
Ken West 43, Niagara Falls 22
Jenna Rickan scored 12 points and Ashley Krier added seven for the Blue Devils, who improved to 4-0 in the Niagara Frontier League. The Falls (0-4) was led on offense by Lakea Crittenden’s 10 points and on defense by Lacey Dykes, who held Rickan to just two points while guarding the Blue Devils star.
Lew-Port 56, NT 34
Kristine Ripson netted 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lancers (4-4, 2-2 NFL) charge in NFL action. Chelsea O’Laughlin added 16 points in the win and Ryleigh Fitzgerald put in 10. Sarah Hansen scored a dozen to lead NT, who fell to 0-4 in the NFL.
Roy-Hart 54, Wilson 49
Amanda Walker scored 12 points and Liz DeWaters and Ashley Scrinzi put in 11 apiece to lead Roy-Hart to the big Niagara-Orleans League win. The Lady Rams (3-0 N-O) also received a 12-rebound effort from Sam Smith. Jessica Curry scored a game-high 20 for Wilson (2-1).
Medina 43, Newfane 39
Maggie Balcerzak scored 17 points and Aiisha Newman finished with 16 to lift Medina (1-2 N-O) to the N-O win. Sonya Rinaldo was the high scorer for Newfane (0-4), tallying 13 points.
Albion 53, Barker 12
Paige Golden scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in a first quarter that saw Albion (3-0 N-O) jump out to a 19-0 advantage. Baylee Hapeman added 10 in the win and Chelsea Beecher scored nine. Barker fell to 1-3 in the league.
Akron 36, CSAT 26
Gus Hallett-Johnson’s 18 points were the difference as Akron improved to 3-0 in the N-O. The loss dropped CSAT to 0-3.
Lake Shore 38, Starpoint 34
The Lady Spartans led by a dozen heading into the fourth quarter, but got outscored 16-0 the rest of the way in ECIC II action.
“We didn’t protect the ball,” coach Marissa Gallo said. “I think the girls weren’t focused in the fourth quarter because they didn’t have much left in their legs.”
Andi Ridge had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and took two charges for Starpoint (5-7 overall, 4-2 ECIC II).
Junior Varsity
• Brittany Kiely had nine points and Maggie Dorian and Jessika Michaels poured in eight apiece as Lew-Port beat NT 36-33. Andrea Scibetta scored 17 in the loss.
Boys Swimming
Lockport 57, Ken West 38
Mark Wallace and Kevin Schroeder each won three events as the Lions evened their Niagara Frontier League record at 3-3. Alex Spatzer and Joe Kromphardt were individual winners for the Blue Devils (1-5).
Niagara Falls 61, Ken East 31
Nick Miller was part of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays for the Wolverines (4-2 NFL) in NFL action. The Bulldogs (0-6) were led by Matt McLaughlin’s wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly.
NT 122, Lew-Port 59
Scott Farrell won the 50 and 100 freestyles to help keep the Lumberjacks’ record unblemished at 6-0 in the NFL. The Lancers’ (4-2) Nick Conde was victorious in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Starpoint 100, Alden 58
Zac Toth won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly to carry the Spartans to the ECIC III win. Marc Toth came in second in the 100 breaststroke for Starpoint (4-0), but set a new school record in the process. Bob Rutkowski set a new Starpoint pool record for Alden in the same race.
Boys Bowling
NT 7, Ken East 0
Nick Byers had a 257-664 to lead the way for the Jacks, who had a 3,822-3,393 pin advantage over the Bulldogs in Niagara Frontier League action at the Tonawanda Bowling Center. NT (5-3 NFL) also benefited from a 236-654 from Josh Horab, a 232-647 from Tyler Skoczylas and Ray Wasieczko’s 218-643. East (0-8) received a 284-652 from Zack Williams.
Girls Bowling
NT 7, Ken East 0
Hannah Mosher’s 236-657 helped carry the Lady Jacks to the Niagara Frontier League win at the Tonawanda Bowling Center. NT (6-2 NFL) won the pin count, 3,303-2,726, and was also led by Chelsie Larson’s 233-580 and Briana Larson’s 219-569. Katelyn Pietrzyk had a 179-526 for East (2-6).
Federation Hockey
Clarence 2, Niagara Falls 1
Late Thursday, the Wolverines fell in a tight large schools contest at the Pepsi Center. David Kok scored the lone goal for NFHS, which got 21 saves from goaltender Greg Bullock.
