North Tonawanda, NY —North Tonawanda used some eighth inning dramatics to defeat Williamsville East 6-3 in extra innings Friday to close out day one of the Lady Jacks’ host tournament.
Sarah Hansen’s sacrifice bunt scored Amanda Mislin for the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.
NT held a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning before the Flames scored two runs to take a 3-2 advantage. The Lady Jacks tied it in the top of the sixth as Joanna Fretthold singled home April Walker (two triples), who reached third on a triple.
Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to the extra frame. Mislin reached base on a bunt single and stole second. Caitlin Kirbis singled to right to put Mislin on third.
After Hansen brought home Mislin, Taylor Akins’ infield double scored Kirbis. Lauren Lipinoga crossed home to make it 6-3.
Junior Allie Gibson scattered six hits and two walks while striking out five to earn the win for the Lady Jacks, who play Dunkirk today at 5:30 p.m. on the New diamond at Edward J. Belbas Fields.
St. Mary’s (Lancaster) 10, Tonawanda 0
Stephanie Simmeth cranked a grand slam in the fifth inning, and Maria Rosati had three hits for St. Mary’s, which won using the mercy rule. Lauren Wesolowski struck out six hitters to earn the win. Lauren Lubecki threw out three of four base stealers.
Amherst 3, Mount St. Mary 2
Erin Dixson was on fire for the winners, striking out 17 Mount St. Mary’s batters in the one-run win. Sarah Carpenter fanned five Tigers hitters over four innings while taking the loss. She also had a triple and two RBIs. Freshman Lisa Petty made three outstanding plays in center field for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary 2, City honors 1
Senior Nicole Farrell pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts for the Thunder. At the plate, Stephanie Giardina was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
St. Mary’s (Lancaster) 5, Roy-Hart 3
Maria Rosati had a pair of hits and Stephanie Simmeth went 2-for-3 for St. Mary’s.
On the day for Roy-Hart, Sam Smith had five hits, senior Colleen Rausch had three, including a home run, and junior Mandy Walker collected two hits with two RBIs as the Rams dropped both games in the tournament. Chelsey Jamieson also had three hits for Roy-Hart.
Albion 8, Lockport 6
Lockport led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth, but three Lady Lions errors led to the Purple Eagles plating four runs to pull ahead for good.
Albion junior shortstop Paige Golden was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Sarah Barrancotta doubled for Lockport.
Lockport 9, Nardin 8 (9 innings)
Down 5-1 in their final at bat, the Lady Lions put on their rally caps and tied the game, before winning it in extra innings.
With one out in the seventh and final frame, LHS freshman Nora Passuite reached first on error, then scored on senior Carol Kojsza’s pinch-hit double. Eighth grader Allie Cavagnaro walked, then freshman Emily Belfield (three RBIs) doubled in both Katie Murphy, who was running in Kojsza’s spot and Cavagnaro to tie it, sending the game into extra innings.
The Lady Lions (3-2) plated four runs in the top of the ninth. Nardin scored three runs in the bottom half, but Lockport held on, with sophomore Jen Kwoka (3-1) picking up the win in the circle in relief.
