HS ROUNDUP (May 12): Mount St. Mary fares well at Immaculata tourney

The Mount St. Mary Thunder varsity softball team won the bronze division of the Immaculata Tournament on Sunday, defeating Lake Shore 1-0 in the championship game. Julia Mariacher singled in the seventh inning and scored on passed ball for the Thunder. Earlier Sunday, the Thunder downed Alden, 13-2, as Ashley LaPorta pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn the win.

On Saturday, Mount St. Mary went 1-1. The Thunder dropped a 10-0 decision to Ripley in six innings before bouncing back with a 7-1 win over Mount Mercy. Junior Nicole Farrell pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Farrell was named the bronze division MVP, while Mariacher and LaPorta made the all-tournament team.

- On Monday, Mount St. Mary downed Nardin, 4-2, in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association play at LaSalle Park. Steph Giardina doubled home Mariacher to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning, sending the Thunder to the win. Bridget Wodowski went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Giardina finished 2-for-3 for Mount St. Mary (9-5 overall, 6-2 MMAA). Information for Nardin wasn’t submitted.



Niagara Falls 5, Lew-Port 2

Holly Conte went the distance in the circle, allowing eight hits and striking out three as the visiting Wolverines picked up a key Niagara Frontier League win. Brittany Hout had two hits and two RBIs and Nikki Kraft added two hits for the Falls (10-6 overall, 8-2 NFL).

Carly McEvoy and Janelle Johnson each had two hits for Lew-Port (2-9 NFL).



Ken East 14, Lockport 2

Alexa Dejesus had four RBIs as the visiting Bulldogs earned the win in NFL action. Kristen DeSchenes threw a three-hitter and helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs for East (5-8 overall, 4-5 NFL). Alex Dickson also had two hits and two RBIs in the win.

Sam Disinger had two of Lockport’s three hits. LHS fell to 0-10 in the league.



N-W 4, Grand Island 3

The Falcons erased a three-run deficit and picked up the NFL win by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Michelle Maggard had an RBI double, while Angela Elliott and Lynette Maggard added an RBI single apiece in the rally. Kaylee Lekki went the distance, allowing only five hits and striking out six for N-W (11-6 overall, 6-4 NFL).

Emily Thompson threw a complete game with seven strikeouts for GI (6-4).



Wilson 16, CSAT 4

Caroline Augustiniak hit a two-run home run — the first ever hit over the new fence installed at Wilson’s Larry Lash Field — as the Lakewomen rolled to a comfortable Niagara-Orleans League win. Three pitchers, Elise Jancef, Raela Wiley and Justice Snickles, combined to pitch a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for Wilson (14-5 overall, 10-0 N-O). Jancef’s two-run double keyed a three-run first inning, while a two-run double by Wiley led the Lakewomen to a five-run fifth.

Victoria Chwalinski had the lone hit for CSAT (0-9).



O’Hara 7, N. Catholic 3

Senior hurler Jessica Limina threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Hawks picked up a key Monsignor Martin win. Kristin Italia scored two runs and had two steals, Kimmie Renda had an RBI single and a run scored and Jen Bognar stole four bases for O’Hara (2-13 overall, 2-6 MMAA).

For NC (0-10 overall, 0-9 MMAA), which was eliminated from playoff contention with loss, Jolene Lambert had a two-run double.



Starpoint 1, Depew 0

Beth Beutel tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks as the Lady Spartans picked up an ECIC III win over the division-leading Wildcats. It’s Starpoint’s first win over Depew since it joined ECIC III four years ago. Meghan White, who was 2-for-3, scored the lone run of the game off a passed ball in the second inning. Danielle Lantenier added a double for Starpoint, which did not make an error. Rachel Bracikowski took the loss for Depew.



Baseball

Niagara Falls 11, Lew-Port 2

Mike Bright threw six innings of four-hit ball with nine strikeouts as the Falls picked up a huge Niagara Frontier League win at Sal Maglie Stadium. He was the beneficiary of a seven-run second inning that was highlighted by two-run singles from Stosh Kafjasz, Eric Cirrito and Jeff Conklin. Matt Paonessa, who finished with three hits on the day, also had an RBI in the frame for NFHS (10-7 overall, 4-6 NFL).

Jeremy Willard had two hits and Matt Cattarin took the loss on the hill for Lew-Port (6-4 NFL).



Ken East 6, Lockport 1

In his first start since an elbow injury early in the season, Scott Whitehead returned in prime form, striking out 11 in a two-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to the NFL win.

“It was a big shot in the arm getting him back,” Bulldogs coach Les Simon said.

Rick Cumbo and Cody Novo each had three hits for East (7-5 overall, 5-4 NFL). Cory Martin had two runs scored, while Jon Tiedeman had a hit and a run.

Kyle Fernandez and Dan Greco each had hits for Lockport (4-11, 2-8).



NT 8, Ken West 4

Kevin Border ripped a go-ahead two-run triple in the sixth inning to help the Lumberjacks even their NFL record at 5-5. Nick Del Gobbo went six innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs for NT (7-7 overall). At the plate, Micah Puscheck had three hits, including a triple and double, and Mitch Jaccarino added two hits and two RBIs in the win.

Losing pitcher William Corbett had a two-run double for West (2-7 NFL).



Grand Island 5, N-W 1

Joel Klock tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Vikings took a three-game lead in the NFL. Joe Oliverio and Shaun Winter were both 2-for-3 with an RBI for GI (13-1 overall, 9-1 NFL).

Paul Smith had an RBI single for N-W (9-7, 6-4).



St. Francis 8, N. Catholic 1

Chris Glowacki had two hits and an RBI, but the visiting Patriots fell in Monsignor Martin action. Rob Swartz went five innings, allowing only four earned runs for NC (3-10 overall, 2-8 MMAA).

Luke Szymanski had two hits and two RBIs for the Red Raiders (16-4, 9-3).



Canisius 9, O’Hara 1

Anthony Christopher had an RBI double for the Hawks, who fell in MMAA action. O’Hara dropped to 2-15 overall and 1-12 in the league. No information was available for Canisius.



Starpoint 8, Depew 2

Canisius College signee Tim Szalkowski threw a complete game, allowing only five hits and striking out six as the Spartans picked up an ECIC III win. Szalkowski was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI for Starpoint (7-9 overall, 5-5 ECIC III). Also for the Spartans, Kevin Hughes had two RBIs, Garrett Britton had two hits and an RBI, Jared Prosser ripped an RBI double and Andy Boyce scored twice.

Nick Gorski hit a two-run home run for Depew (1-9).



St. Joe’s 4, Kenmore East 1

In a game played late Saturday, the Marauders picked up the non-league win. Jeff Bellanca had a pair of RBIs in the win.



Junior Varsity

- Freshman Danny Montesanti threw a no-hitter as NT beat Ken West, 8-1. Derek Bloomfield had three hits and Steven Bziak had two hits for NT (7-3).

- Andy DeWitt pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven to lead NFHS over Lew-Port, 7-0. Kyle McGovern and Tommy Hanna each had two RBIs for the Falls (6-4).



Tennis

Lockport 4, Ken East 1

Brandon Pawlinski and Kevin Miller kept their winning ways rolling, as the first doubles team led Lockport (11-2 NFL) to the Niagara Frontier League victory by pulling out a tiebreaker to win their second set.

Bryan Papaj, who will be one of two Niagara Frontier League representatives in the Section VI singles tournament, got the lone win for Ken East (2-9).



Lew-Port 5, North Tonawanda 0

The Lancers might have found a new combination as Tyler Diez and Brandon Piva were paired for the first time at first doubles and shined in a two-set win in NFL action.

Justin Willard also had a solid victory in first singles for Lew-Port (5-6). North Tonawanda fell to 2-10.



Ken West 4, Niagara Falls 1

Andre Pozantidis rolled again in first singles and Kenmore West is poised to finish the NFL season unbeaten after the Blue Devils (13-0) topped the Wolverines.

T.J. Bullock got the lone win for Niagara Falls (7-3).



Grand Island 3, N-Wheatfield 2

Scott Holler fought off three match points, then rallied in a third-set tiebreaker to lift the Vikings to an upset NFL win over the Falcons.

Mike Slawich had Holler 5-2 in the third, but the junior fought back as Grand Island (2-10) got a big win.

“He started the season at first doubles, but for the past three matches we put him at second singles and he’s been close,” GI coach Don Pray said. “This was his breakout match.”

Alex Buerger won at first singles for N-W (5-7).



ECIC Championships

Tonawanda’s Thomas Karanas and Josh Choate participated in the ECIC championships, getting bumped out in Monday’s first round.



Girls Lacrosse

Will. South 9, Lockport 8

Kayla Minner netted three goals for the Lady Lions (2-11 overall) but it wasn’t enough in the non-league loss. Renee Schwartz had two goals and single goals were added by Lea Sobieraski, Allie Quast and Nicky Spin. Williamsville South improved to 4-7.



Frontier 14, NT 3

Lindsay Hojnowski had two goals and Catherine Duquin also scored for NT, but it wasn’t nearly enough in Division I play. NT fell to 0-10 in the league. No information was available for Frontier.



N-W 13, Sweet Home 8

Zan Weinholtz put in nine goals and dished out two assists to give N-W the Division II win. Mia McKie had a goal and four assists, Kayla Melligan had one goal and one assist and Felicia Cobello scored her first-ever varsity goal. Taylor Hummel made 16 saves in net for N-W (5-6 overall, 5-5 Division II). Laura Nerber led Sweet Home’s offensive output with three goals.



MSM 20, Buff. Seminary 5

Nicole Faulise had four goals and two assists as the Mount remained unbeaten in Monsignor Martin play. Monica Bailey had four goals and Liz Roffi had three goals and two assists for the Thunder (8-2 overall, 8-0 MMAA).



Boys Lacrosse

Will. North 15, Lockport 5

Nick Ciemny and Derek Rocco each had two goals, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Lions in Class A action. Mike Pass also scored for LHS (5-8 overall, 2-6 Class A). Nick Hereth netted four goals for North (4-7, 3-4).



WSE 15, Grand Island 5

Tyler Strassburg had four goals and four assists to lead West Seneca East (8-6 overall, 4-3 Class B) to the Class B victory. Alex Hultgren had four goals for Grand Island (5-7, 3-4). Goalie Nick Mouio had eight saves in net.
