HS ROUNDUP (May 15): Vikings take it to NT in baseball and softball

Greg Stephan threw a complete game with four strikeouts, scattering nine hits, as Grand Island put its clamps on the Niagara Frontier League baseball title with a 4-2 victory over North Tonawanda on Thursday. Shaun Winter had two hits with two RBIs and Chris Podlucky added two doubles, and knocked in a run for Grand Island (15-1 overall, 11-1 in NFL).

For North Tonawanda (5-7 NFL), Curtis Monaco, Mitch Jaccarino and Doug Vaillancourt all had two hits.



Lockport 13, Ken West 6

Adam Biano was 4-for-5 at the plate, including three extra-base hits, leading the Lions to the NFL win. He finished with two RBIs and two runs scored for LHS (5-12 overall, 3-9 NFL). Colton Fago also had a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a pair of two-baggers, good for three RBIs. Ricky Christopher had two hits for West (2-9).



Lew-Port 8, N-Wheatfield 7

Rob Daggett tossed a complete game and reached base four times as the Lancers won a key NFL game. Lew-Port (11-7 overall, 8-4 NFL) scored seven runs in the fourth to win the game. Paul Smith had two hits and an RBI for N-W (7-5).



CSAT 9, Roy-Hart 8

A grand slam by Rayle Potanzas in the sixth inning lifted CSAT to a big N-O win. Both teams are now 3-8 in the league.



St. Francis 15, O’Hara 0

The host Hawks dropped their Monsignor Martin regular-season finale, as Paul Coleman registered the only hit in defeat. O’Hara finished 2-16 overall and 1-13 in league play.



Junior Varsity

- Josh Kern had three hits and combined with Jesse Puscheck to throw a two-hitter as NT beat GI, 8-1. Josh Horab had two hits for the Lumberjacks (9-3).

- Irvin Buck had two hits and three RBIs and Andy DeWitt tossed three innings of one-hit relief to get the win on the mound for NFHS (13-5, 8-4) in an 8-6 victory over Ken East.

- Joe Tardibuono three a three-hitter and hit an RBI triple as N-W beat Lew-Port, 6-3. Jordan Matos added two hits and two runs scored for N-W (8-8, 6-5). Lorne Shotwell had an RBI triple in the loss.



Softball

Grand Island 7, NT 2

Shari Geblein had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs as the Vikings picked up a big Niagara Frontier League win at Belbas Field. Geblein also scored a pair of runs for GI (11-4 overall, 8-4 NFL). Alex Peters added two hits and two RBIs and Leanna Kozlowski had three hits in the win. Emily Thompson went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and striking out seven.

Julie Harmon had a triple and Caitlin Kirbis picked up a pair of hits for NT (6-6).



N. Falls 2, Ken East 1 (8 inns.)

Kammie Moyer knocked in Brittany Hout for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, helping the Wolverines improve to 9-2 in the NFL. Holly Conte threw a five-hitter with 15 strikeouts for Niagara Falls (11-6 overall). East fell to 5-6 in the NFL.



Ken West 16, Lockport 2

Kaley Vazquez pitched the complete game, striking out nine for the host Blue Devils in the NFL win. Samantha Stewart had four hits, three RBIs and three runs for West (10-3 overall, 8-2 NFL), while Carly Taylor added three hits, including a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Hannah Hall and Christa Campbell each had two hits for Lockport (0-12).



N-Wheatfield 16, Lew-Port 3

Becca Pringle had four hits, three RBIs and scored three times as the Falcons won in NFL action. Christina Nolan added two hits, three RBIs and four stolen bases, while Kyrstin Lekki had two hits and three RBIs for N-W (13-6 overall, 8-4 NFL). Kaylee Lekki went the distance in the circle, allowing only five hits and striking out five.

Carly Knight had two hits and two RBIs for the Lancers (2-11).



Medina 14, CSAT 2

A three-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Casey Flynn, ignited Medina to a N-O victory. Alishia Foss, Ryin Moriarity and Lindsay Froman each had two hits and three runs scored for Medina (6-6 N-O). CSAT drops to 0-12 in the league.



Boys Lacrosse

N-Wheatfield 13, Frontier 11

Elijha Printup had three goals and four assists as the Falcons clinched home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the playoffs with a win over Frontier in Class A. Kyle Henry added three goals for Wheatfield (12-4 overall, 8-1 Class A) which outscored the hosts 6-2 in the fourth quarter to get a big win on the heels of a narrow loss to Orchard Park on Tuesday.

Pierce Abrams added two goals and two assists while Emmett Printup, Ben Woodbury, Tomas Lester, Dave Evert and Chad Leadingfox also scored for the Falcons, who rebounded after another flat start found them trailing 5-1 after the first quarter.

Frontier fell to 6-2 in the league.



Girls Lacrosse

WSE 12, Grand Island 1

Catie Hilliard had the lone goal for the Vikings (0-12) in the Division II road loss.



Will. North 10, NT 4

Goaltender Shauna Rehar made 18 saves as the Lady Jacks fell to 0-12 in Division I.



Boys Tennis

Niagara Falls 3, N-W 2

T.J. Bullock lost the first set in a tiebreaker, then bounced back in a big way, winning the next two sets by identical 6-0 scores as visiting Niagara Falls picked up the Niagara Frontier League win. Wills Cushman won at third singles for NFHS (10-3 NFL), while the first doubles team of Eric Spanbauer and Curt Ventresca also won.

Alex Buerger won at first singles for the Falcons (6-8).



Ken East 3, Lew-Port 2

The visiting Bulldogs’ first doubles team of Sean Walters and Stephen Davis pulled out a three-set match, leading the way in NFL action.

“First doubles had a lot of close matches this year and they finally pulled one out,” East coach David Coates said. “We hope it carries over into next season.”

Bryan Papaj and Dillon Oliveri won at singles for East (3-9).

The doubles team of Tyler Diez and Patrick Polley picked up a win for Lew-Port (5-9), as did Tom Matikianen at second singles.



Medina 5.5, Akron 0

Capping off the regular season on a high note, Medina blanked visiting Akron in a Niagara-Orleans League match which was also coach Chris Horgan’s 200th career victory.

Straight-set singles wins by the trio of Steve Lin, Ketan Mehta and Joe Moriarty led the way for Medina (9-3 N-O). Akron fell to 1-11.
