HS ROUNDUP (May 19): East, West score softball wins

Five Kenmore East batters — Alex Dickson, Kristin DeSchenes, Jaclyn Bellanti, Liz Lawless and Jordan Hertel — recorded an RBI in the eighth inning to help the Kenmore East Bulldogs to a key 5-0 Niagara Frontier League victory over Grand Island on Monday.

Lawless finished with three hits, while Dickson, DeSchenes and Bellanti all had two rips apiece. DeSchenes went the distance in the circle, allowing only three hits and not walking a single batter for East (6-7 NFL).

Amber Hultgren tossed a complete game for GI (8-5), while Leanna Kozlowski had a double.



Ken West 8, Lew-Port 3

Kaley Vazquez had a three-run home run and was also the winning pitcher for the host Blue Devils in NFL play. Vazquez struck out a pair in the complete game. Nicole Catalano had a pair of hits, including a double, for West (12-3 overall, 10-2 NFL).

Janeanne LePage had a double for Lew-Port (2-11).



Newfane 13, CSAT 2

Sam Kelly, Melissa Kroe, Kristi Grimes and Justine Esposito each had three hits for head coach Katy Stedman’s Lady Panthers, who improved to 5-8 in the N-O. Kelly, Kroe and Grimes all had two baggers for the hosts. Winning pitcher Jen Werth fanned seven for the winners, while CSAT dropped to 0-13.



Baseball

Lew-Port 10, Ken West 8

Jeremy Willard’s three-run double in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and led the Lancers to the Niagara Frontier League win at Washuta Park. Rob Daggett added a double, home run and three RBIs for the hard-hitting Lancers (12-7 overall, 9-4 NFL). Matt Cattarin added a solo home run and Tyler Magliazzo scored three times for Lew-Port. Mike Ziobrowski started the game and pitched into the fifth, but Danny Sharpe was credited for the win in relief.

Rick Christopher had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for West (2-11). Jon Dray added two hits for the Blue Devils.



Grand Island 13, Ken East 5

Neal DeMartin was 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Vikings continued to roll in NFL play. Shaun Winter was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs and Mike Heftka added two hits and three RBIs for GI (16-1 overall, 12-1 NFL). Winning pitcher Joel Klock and Marv Pawlowski had two hits apiece. Klock went six innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out seven.

For East (6-7), Kevin Whitehead was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and an RBI. Scott Whitehead was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Cody Novo added an RBI triple.



Medina 11, CSAT 7

A six-run first inning sparked Medina to the N-O win at Vets Park. Tyler Evans and Donnie O’Keefe had two hits for the Mustangs (7-5 N-O). CSAT fell to 3-9.



Track & Field

N-O meet

Host Royalton-Hartland earned three first-place finishes at the first day of the two-day Niagara-Orleans League Track & Field Championships. Kelly Heuer of the Lady Rams won the girls 3,000 in 11:32.43. Roy-Hart also won the 1,600 relay in 4:14.39 with the foursome of Liz DeWaters, Rachael Phipps, Teresa White and Christine Badhorn. Barker’s Emma Dewart was a double winner in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (34-4 1/2). Newfane also had a double winner in martial arts expert Adam Irr, who captured the 800 (2:04.40) and the pole vault (10-0). Newfane’s Molly Coakley, a top local gymnast, won the girls pole vault (9-6) and her Lady Panthers teammate, Ally Pierce, took the discus (89-7). Wilson’s Don Truesdell won the 3,200 (9:51.43). Albion’s Marcus Taylor won the boys triple jump with a leap of 41-0 and also teamed up with Morris Taylor, Ben Wadhams and Chad Kirby to win the 1,600 relay in 3:41.44. Hannah Moffett took first for the Purple Eagles in the girls 800 in a time of 2:30.58.



Boys Lacrosse

Cicero-North Syracuse 16, N-W 15

James Haney netted the winning goal in overtime to give Cicero-North Syracuse the non-league win over the Falcons. Haney’s goal was one of four for the game and Lloyd Hamilton had four scores of his own in the win.

Kyle Henry led N-W (12-5 overall, 8-1 Class A) with four goals, Emmett Printup had two goals and four assists and Elijha Printup scored twice and dished out three helpers. Also for N-W, Tomas Lester had three goals and Dave Evert found the net twice.



Will. North 16, NT 3

Cory Stuff had two goals, but the Lumberjacks fell in their Class A finale. Alec Lemanski also scored for the hosts. No additional information was available.
