BOWLING: Stack, Gerfin, Hanes and Pollinger to be honored by TONUSBC

Three players and one service member will be honored Saturday at the Tonawandas USBC Bowling Association dinner gala.

Ben Stack, Bill Gerfin and Doris Hanes will be honored in the ability category, while Rita Pollinger will be honored in the service category at the dinner, which will take place at Classics V in Amherst.

Here’s a look at those being honored:

Ben Stack

An active bowler since 1930, Stack has career highs of a 289 single, 756 three-game series and 208 average. Also a member of the Buffalo Bowling Association Hall of Fame, Stack has been the Tonawandas city champion and served at the league’s office.

Bill Gerfin

A member of the Tonawandas Bowling Association/Tonawandas USBC since 1968, Gerfin has several 300 games and 800 series to his credit. His career-high average reached 233. Gerfin is a two-time winner of the Herbert E. Burns Match Game Tournament and owns several Tonawanda City Tournament titles.

Gerfin is also a past member of the Tonawandas Board of Directors, league president and league and team sponsor.

Doris Hanes

A member of the Twin City WBA/Tonawandas USBC for more than 20 years, Hanes has several 300 games and carries a high series of 786 and high average of 210.

Hanes has bowled in five leagues for many years, winning high average, series or game several times. She’s also held many league officer positions.

Hanes has won several city championships, kick-off tournaments, participated in all state tournaments since 1979 and won the WIBC Open Doubles title with Sue Schottke.

Hanes at one time also held the national record for a four-man team with a pin count of 2,866, achieved with Schottke, Mike Hanes and Mike Firzak.

Rita Pollinger

Pollinger has also been a member of the Twin City WBA for more than 20 years. She has a career-high game of 300 and several 700 series.

Pollinger has been a TCWBA Queens champion and placed high in NYSWBA tournaments. Pollinger has been an active supporter of bowling with her participation with the Buffalo 600 Club as secretary/treasurer, a junior bowling coach, Twin City WBA vice president, Tonawanda Bowling Council vice president, WNY Queens committee and TCWBA Hall of Fame committee.
