HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 7): East boys soccer stays unbeaten in NFL

Staff Reports

Casey Sheehan had two goals to lift Kenmore East to a 3-0 win over North Tonawanda in the Niagara Frontier League.

Also for East (10-1-3 overall, 8-0-3 NFL), Dylan Vaccaro scored and James Quinn recorded his sixth shutout bu making five saves. NT fell to 5-4-1 in the league.

N-W 2, Niagara Falls 0

Vinnie Zuccari and Ricky Coates scored for the Falcons in the Niagara Frontier League win. John Netter made seven saves in net for the shutout for N-W (6-6-3 overall, 4-5-2 NFL). Defender Paul Morrison played well for the Falls (1-10).

Grand Island 2, Lew-Port 1

Shaun Winter scored both goals for the Vikings, including the game winner with just over five minutes remaining in the key NFL contest. Goalkeeper Jeremy Figler made nine saves for GI (6-6-2 overall, 4-5-2 NFL), which got a strong game at midfield from Joe Fischer. For Lew-Port (7-5-2, 3-5-2), Tyler Diez scored off a pass from Mike Curatolo. Grant Stella played well defensively in the loss.

Lockport 2, Ken West 1

Senior midfielder Jay Dry scored both goals for the Lions in a tight NFL win. (10-3-2 overall, 7-2-2 NFL). Also for LHS (10-3-2 overall, 7-2-2 NFL), goalkeeper Chris Paradise made 10 saves to pick up the win. Brian Courtney netted the lone goal for the visiting Blue Devils (7-6-1, 4-6).

St. Joe’s 9, St. Mary’s 1

Zach Schmidt had three goals and both C.J. Scirto and Luke Overthurn added two apiece as the Maruaders rolled in Monsignor Martin action. Sam Wopperer and Michael Kelly also scored, while Mike Radecke had four assists for St. Joe’s (7-5-1 overall, 3-2 NFL). The Lancers dropped to 1-3-1 in the league.

V-Lyndonville 4, Roy-Hart 1

Josh Goodrich had two goals for the Tigers in the non-league win. Mike Slattery scored for the Rams. Records were not provided.

Junior Varsity

n Mike Brocklehurst had two goals and John Keynon, Nick Young, Kyle Mentkowski, Cal Richards and Nikolas Xenopolous also scored for NT in a 7-2 win over Ken East.

Girls Soccer

Ken West 0, NT 0

Christina Saroken had eight saves in net for NT and Melissa Pawlowski saves four shots for West in a Niagara Frontier League tie. Samantha Castanzo and Meghan Lipinoga played well defensively for NT (9-4-1 overall, 7-3-1 NFL). West moves to 9-0-2 in the league.

Starpoint 6, Depew 1

Kristi Delabio had a hat trick to lift the Lady Spartans to the ECIC III win. Her older sister, Teresa, tied the single-season goal record with her 33rd tally in the win. Also for Starpoint (11-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 ECIC III), Nicole Borner and Katelyn Mazgaj scored and Kristen Giberson had two assists. Rachel Banasik scored for Depew (8-5-1, 5-4).

Alden 1, Tonawanda 0

Brittany Czajka scored with 25 minutes left to lead the Bulldogs to the ECIC IV win and improve to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the league. For THS (5-6-1, 4-5-1), Deanna Bowers made 13 saves in net and defender Brittany Giuga played well.

Girls Volleyball

Lockport 3, N-W 0

Leah Sobieraski had eight kills and three aces for the Lady Lions in the 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 Niagara Frontier League victory. Katelyn Prue added 28 assists and three kills, while Erin Miller had seven kills and three kills and Emily Donovan chipped in with three kills for LHS (8-4 overall, 8-2 NFL). For N-W (6-8, 5-5), Ashley Campagnolo and Kailey Walck played well.

Grand Island 3, Lew-Port 0

Chelsea Hall led the way with 11 kills in the 25-13, 25-14, 25-21 NFL sweep. Lexi Raepple added eight kills for the Vikings (6-7 overall, 5-5 NFL). Kristine Ripson led Lew-Port (2-8) with three kills, three blocks and four digs. Genna Haseley added three kills and five blocks.

NT 3, Niagara Falls 0

Lauren Metzger had 12 kills and four aces as the Lumberjacks rolled to an easy 25-10, 25-10, 25-11 NFL victory. Also for NT (10-4 overall, 8-2 NFL), Jordan Tylec had 15 assists and five aces and Joanna Fretthold added nine kills and five digs. No stats were provided by NFHS (0-10).

Newfane 3, Barker 0

Katie Wright has eight service aces and four kills to lead the Lady Panthers to a 25-9, 25-12, 25-13 win in Niagara-Orleans League action. Also for Newfane (7-2 N-O), Nicole Adamson had 12 digs and four assists, Kate Jones added 23 assists and Ally Pierce chipped in with three blocks and 13 kills. Barker fell to 0-9 in the league.

Akron 3, Medina 0

Bridget Shanahan added 14 kills, 12 service points and four blocks for Roy-Hart (9-0 N-O). Lindsay Bryer posted 20 digs and Molly Bloom added 13 assists for the Lakewomen (3-7).

Holy Angels 3, N.Catholic 0

Town of Wheatfield resident Julie Putzak had eight kills and eight aces to lift Holy Angels to the 25-8, 25-6, 25-9 Monsignor Martin sweep and up its record to 7-5 overall and 6-5 in the league. For NC (1-13, 1-7), Katrina Crossley was 6-for-6 serving with three kills and four digs and Jolene Lambert added two kills and a block.

Starpoint 3, Clarence 1

Veronica Crosby posted her second triple-double of the season with 11 service points, 10 kills and 10 blocks as the Lady Spartans picked up the 22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 non-league win. Also for Starpoint (12-0 overall), Sam Palka had 25 kills, Julia Matters racked up 14 service points and 11 kills and Sydney Palka added 42 assists.

Albion 3, Cheektowaga 1

Lisa Bierdeman had 10 service points, 21 assists and nine kills to lead the Purple Eagles to the 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 non-league win. Also for Albion (13-2 overall), Paige Golden had five aces, seven digs, nine kills and three blocks. Neysha Harrell had eight kills and four blocks for the Warriors (10-5).

n Kaylin Moore had 16 kills as Lockport beat N-W, 25-20, 12-25, 25-15.

Girls Tennis

Ken East 3, Niagara Falls 2

Melissa Willhoff, Molly Lundquist and Kelsey Cox all won their singles matches to lead the Bulldogs (9-3 NFL) to the Niagara Frontier League win. Winners for NFHS (7-6) were the doubles teams of Alexis Schmidtke and Rachel Connors and Amanda Beal and Elizabeth Downs.

N-W 5, NT 0

Angela Hastings imrpoved to 13-0 on the year at first singles and Julie Kalita won her first career singles match to help the Falcons improve to 12-1 in the NFL. NT dropped to 2-11.

Ken West 5, Lew-Port 0

The doubles teams of Allie Diamond and Avery Fisher and Katie Dzielski and Amanda Brylinski dropped only five combined games to help the Blue Devils pick up the NFL win and improve to 9-4. Lew-Port dropped to 0-13.

Starpoint 5, Maryvale 0

Jenna Maldiner, Chloe Withiam-Leitch and Megan Gildersleeve won singles matches for the Lady Spartans, who improved to 5-2 in ECIC III. Maldiner and Withiam-Leitch remain undefeated this season. Maryvale fell to 1-9.

Field Hockey

Starpoint 2, WSW 0

Brittany Braun scored both goals on penalty corners to lift the Lady Spartans to the ECIC small schools win. Also for Starpoint (2-6-3 ECIC), Anna McCullough had the shutout, while Aimee Larson was strong in the midfield. West Seneca West dropped to 1-9-2 in the league.

Boys Volleyball

N-W 3, Lockport 1

Ben Woodbury had 17 kills to help the Falcons to the 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-11 Niagara Frontier League win. Also for N-W (6-4 NFL), Shawn Haseley had 10 kills and Brian Almendinger added 15 digs. Adam Taylor had 14 kills and Kyle Shanley added 12 digs for the Lions (3-7).

Scott Holler notched 15 kills, five digs and four aces to lead the Vikings to the 25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-9 NFL win. Also for GI (10-2 overall, 9-2 NFL), Nick Alizadeh had 11 kills and Nick Vitello added five kills and four aces. For NFHS (2-8), Matt Thompson had eight kills.
