HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 17): NT's Smyth scores four, Sabo wins 100th

Steve Sabo got his 100th career coaching win as Amanda Smyth had four goals and an assist for the Lady Jacks in the NFL win. Lauren Clausen had the other goal for NT (10-6-1 overall, 8-5-1 NFL) while Alyssa Colangelo shined up front and Meghan Lipinoga starred on defense. For Niagara Falls (2-15, 0-13), Amelia Martinez had the lone goal, assisted by Darcie Rosinski.
Lew-Port 1, Lockport 0
Haley Besaw scored the winning goal for the Lancers on a pass from Hannah Matthews with 4:10 remaining in the Niagara Frontier League contest. Nikki Mohkiber made 16 saves for Lew-Port (10-4-1 overall, 8-4-1 NFL). Ellen Finn stopped 20 shots for Lockport (4-10 NFL).
Ken West 3, Ken East 2
Cristina Ippolito, Lexi Panepinto and Jenna Rickan scored to help the Blue Devils pick up the close NFL win. Jenna Panepinto and Charlotte Clark tallied assists for West (13-1-3 overall, 11-0-2 NFL). No information was available for East (3-14, 3-11).
Wilson 7, Barker 0
Wilson had a pair of hat tricks — one from Molly Curry and another from Jess Foster — en route to the Niagara-Orleans League victory. Kari Stoelting had a lone goal for the Lakewomen (10-6-1 overall, 6-4-1 in N-O) while Katie Kiely and Amber Racette each spent time in net during the win. Kaitlyn Thompson played well on defense. Barker fell to 0-10 in the league.
Medina 3, Roy-Hart 0
Alishia Foss, Laura Dellinger and Sharon Husung rounded out the scoring for Medina which improved to 7-4 in the N-O. Roy-Hart fell to 2-10.
Akron 1, Albion 0
Ali Cashmore scored the lone goal to help the Tigers improve to 9-2 in the N-O. Albion falls to 9-2.
Starpoint 2, Amherst 1
Brittany Bratek had the winning goal with eight minutes left as the Lady Spartans (12-2-1 overall, 8-1-1 ECIC III) handed Amherst (14-3, 8-1) its first ECIC III loss. Nicole Borner also scored for Starpoint, while Chelsea Reed made seven saves.
E.Aurora 3, Tonawanda 0
Nicole Mason, Haley Keller and Erin Holbrook netted goals to help the Blue Devils (13-2-1 overall, 11-0 ECIC IV) remain undefeated in ECIC IV play. The Warriors (6-8-1, 5-6-1) were led by Deanna Bowers’ 19 saves in goal.
N.Catholic 1, Immaculata 1 (2OT)
Jenna McCune had her 18th goal of the season as the Patriots went two overtimes with Immaculata, but a winner couldn’t be determined. Renee Polka had a great game in net with 21 saves, while Emily Bird shined on defense for NC (3-9-1, 2-5-1 MMAA).
Girls SWIMMING
Niagara Falls 98, Grand Island 80
Freshman Lauren Evans set a new school record and qualified for the state championships in the 100 breaststroke as the Niagara Falls girls swim team picked up a victory over Grand Island in Niagara Frontier League action to improve to 4-0.
Megan McInerney won the diving for GI (1-3).
N-W 94, Lockport 92
Alexxa Poliachik won both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly to help the Falcons to the narrow Niagara Frontier League win. Also for N-W (2-2 NFL), Marissa Oakey set a school record in 500 free despite finishing second to Lockport’s Caroline Tolli. Tolli also won the 200 free for LHS (2-2).
NT 111, Lew-Port 43
Sophomore diver Samantha Johnson set a pool record with 230.15 points to help the Lady Jacks improve to 3-1 in the NFL. The Lancers fell to 0-4 on the year.
Ken West 69, Ken East 25
Marissa Dressel won the 100 freestyle and 100 back and was on a pair of winning relay teams as the Blue Devils topped their rivals to improve to 4-0 in the NFL. Sasha Nagelhout won the 50 free for East (1-3).
Holland 52, Tonawanda 49
Emily Christman took the diving competition, but the Warriors fell in ECIC III action. Holland improved to 6-2.
Boys Cross Country

In a battle between the Niagara Frontier League’s top three teams at Reservoir Park, the Lions picked up a pair of wins to take the regular season crown with an unblemished 7-0 record. GI (6-1) nipped the Falcons (5-2) in the other matchup. GI’s Evan Tsembelis crossed the finish first in 16:39, followed by Alex Lennert (Lockport), Drew Perilli (Lockport), Nick Masiello (Grand Island) and Jeremy Orton (Lockport). N-W’s Nathan Haag was sixth.

At Bond Lake No. 1, North Tonawanda’s Alex Farrell was first in 17:49 to help the Lumberjacks (4-3 NFL) to the NFL sweep. NFHS (3-4) topped Lew-Port (1-6) in the other matchup. Rounding out the top five was Jared Quinn (NT), Nick Kirisits (NT), Adam Zaczek (Niagara Falls) and Andrew Krause (Lew-Port).

The undefeated Raiders, now ranked second in the state in Class D, were led by Tyler Scheving, who finished in 17:26 in the N-O win. He was followed by Eric Bennes, Mike Lantinen, Shaun Thompson and Ryan Lamb.

Starpoint’s Zach Ahart was first in 16:36 as the Spartans capped off a perfect 5-0 season in ECIC III action. Other top finishers for Starpoint were Cam Laderer, Pat Freeman and Lee Gugino.

Maritina Tsembelis finished first in 20:59 to help the Vikings clinch the regular season Niagara Frontier League title at Reservoir Park. GI improved to 7-0. Rounding out the top five finishers were Dominique DeGregorio (Grand Island), Megan Karpie (Grand Island), Allie Bartkowaiak (Lockport) and Sarah Bartkowiak (Lockport). Meghan Gonyea was 12th for N-W.

Casey Sheehan had three goals and Phil Pinzone added a pair of goals as the Bulldogs scored a win in the rivalry game to clinch the Niagara Frontier League title. Also for East (12-2-3 overall, 10-1-3 NFL), Dillon Olivieri also scored and Cody Rouse added a pair of assists. C.J. Brunner had the lone goal Ken West (7-8-2, 4-8-1).
Grand Island 3, N-W 1
Shaun Winter, Jordan Gibson and Christian Gibson had goals for the Vikings in the NFL win. Also for GI (9-7-2 overall, 7-5-2 NFL), Jeremy Figler made eight saves in the win. Dillon Fedak scored for the Falcons (6-9-3, 4-8-2).
NT 1, Niagara Falls 0
Jonathan Vargas scored 20 minutes into the game to help the Lumberjacks to the NFL win. Matt Mourgas made two saves for his seventh shutout of the year. Also for NT (9-7-2 overall, 7-5-2 NFL), Nick Rosart played well at center-midfield and Anthony Appiani was solid defensively. The Falls fell to 1-13 in the league.

Junior striker Matt McCoy netted three goals to help the Lions improve to 10-2-2 in the NFL. Andrew Granchelli and Jim May also scored and Chris Paradise had the shutout. Lew-Port dropped to 5-6-2 in the league.

St. Joe’s 3, St. Francis 2
David Fortman had 52 assists and Eddie Pyszczynski had 14 kills as the Marauders picked up the 26-24, 14-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 Monsignor Martin win. Also for St. Joe’s (10-3 overall, 6-2 MMAA), Collin Gordon had eight kills and five blocks.
Girls Volleyball
N-W 3, Niagara Falls 0
Jessica Crooks had 10 kills and Kailey Walck added 19 assists to help the Falcons pick up the 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 Niagara Frontier League win. N-W improves to 9-8 overall and 7-5 in the league. For NFHS (0-12), Michelle Granieri had four kills and Courtney Summers played well defensively.

Lea Sobiraski had nine kills, five blocks and four digs as the Lady Lions improved to 9-3 in the NFL with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 win. Also for LHS, Amy Johnson had nine kills, six aces and five digs and Katelyn Prue added 21 assiusts and seven digs. For East (2-10), Alex Dickson had 13 digs and Summer Amoia added eight assists.
Ken West 3, Lew-Port 1
Lauren Kirby had eight kills and four aces as the Blue Devils picked up the 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19 NFL win. Also for West (14-0 overall, 12-0 NFL), Sarah Pray had 14 assists and Chelsea Moore notched 15 assists and six aces. For Lew-Port (2-10), Genna Haseley had eight blocks and Shannon Lawson had seven aces.
Roy-Hart 3, Newfane 1
Led by 22 kills, 21 digs and seven kills from Bridget Shanahan, the Rams locked up the Niagara-Orleans League title with a 25-13, 21-25, 25-16, 32-30 win. Also for Roy-Hart (11-0 N-O), Ashley Scrinzi had 16 kills and 17 digs and Molly McEvoy added 45 assists. Newfane falls to 8-3.
Medina 3, Barker 1
Kelsey Matuszak had eight kills and Kelly Jo Pritchard added seven kills as the Mustangs improved to 2-9 in the N-O. Brandy Adams had eight aces and five kills for Barker (0-11).
Albion 3, Akron 0
Lisa Bierdeman had 17 service points and 18 assists and Ginny Cole added seven kills as the Purple Eagles improved to 9-2 in the N-O. Akron fell to 6-6.
Wilson 3, N.Catholic 0
Molly Bloom racked up nine aces on 15 service points to lead the Lakewomen to the 25-12, 25-17, 25-15 non-league victory. Jessica Curry added four blocks for Wilson (4-12 overall, 3-8 N-O). Katrina Crossley was 9-for-9 serving for the Patriots (1-17, 1-11 MMAA), with Erica Caso setting well and Cory Catanese providing good passes.
TENNIS
Three doubles teams advance to sectionals
The Kenmore East duo of Kelly Lunquist and Kelsey Cox were crowned champions of the annual Niagara Frontier League Doubles Sectional Qualifer Tuesday at Sportsplex in North Tonawanda. Lundquist and Cox beat the Grand Island team of Alexandra Buscaglia and Kaitie Samland, 8-4 for the championship. In the consolation match, the Lockport duo of Lauren Currie and Mallory McIntosh picked up the win to earn the third and final spot in next week’s sectionals tournament.
Field Hockey
Medina 1, Wilson 0
Bailey Hartway scored the game winner for the Mustangs with 6:15 remaining off an assist from Chasity Chinn in Niagara-Orleans League action. Paige Green had the shutout for Medina (6-7 N-O). Wilson fell to 4-8-1 in the league.
Akron 9, Ken West 0
Kierstyn Sturmer scored five goals and Shannon Winney earned the shutout in the net to help the Tigers improve to 9-4 in the N-O. West falls to 0-13.
Newfane 2, Roy-Hart 1
First half goals by Molly Coakley, on a penalty stroke, and Megan Coakley lifted Newfane to the N-O win. The Panthers improve to 7-5-1, while the Rams fall to 8-3-2.
Barker 8, Ken East 0
Alexandra Gancasz and Brittany Cordaro each scored two goals each as the Raiders improved to 120-1 in the N-O. Sienna Dear, Crystal Mott, Ayssa Hare and Megan Kieffer also scored and Rachel Anderson earned the shutout in goal. East falls to 3-9-1.
