HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 23): Lewandowski sets KW volleyball record

In a Tonawanda News story earlier in the season, Kenmore West senior Taylor Lewandowski admitted that ordinary is bland, that she’d rather stand out as an individual.

After Thursday’s 3-2 nonleague win over City Honors, Lewandowski does stand out.

Lewandowski had 25 kills in the come-from-behind win, surpassing 200 on the season and breaking 2007 graduate Rachael Bowler’s previous mark. She also had 17 digs and three blocks.

The Blue Devils (12-4 overall) dropped the first two games 9-25 and 14-25 before rallying to take the next three, and the match, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.

Kaley Vazquez had 34 assists and Chelsea Moore chipped in with 31 digs for West.

Carly Daniel had 14 kills and Natalya Burgess added 26 assists for the Centaurs.

Niagara Catholic 3, South Park 0

Senior Emily Andrews had eight aces and 10 kills as the Patriots picked up a 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 non-league win. Also for NC (5-13 overall), Jolene Lambert had five digs, three kills and an ace and Alex House added two kills and an ace.

Boys Volleyball

NT 3, Lew-Port 1

Darren Godfrey had 11 kills and Paul Lukasik added nine aces and 26 assists for the Jacks in the 25-11, 23-25, 25-8, 25-12 NFL win. NT improves to 6-7 in the league. Chris Circzak had six kills for Lew-Port (0-13).

Lockport 3, Niagara Falls 0

Sean Smith had 12 service aces in the Lions’ 25-7, 25-10, 25-18 Niagara Frontier League win. Also for LHS (11-2 NFL), Mike Kojsza had nine kills and Kyle Shanley added 15 digs. Lockport can clinch the NFL title Monday with a win over Grand Island. The Falls drops to 2-11.

N-W 3, Ken West 1

Grant and Shawn Haseley had 14 kills and combined for eight blocks as the Falcons won the NFL match 25-16, 25-8, 27-29, 25-21. Kyle Henry added 16 kills and 23 assists and Cliff Jacobs had 16 digs for N-W (10-3 NFL). For West (10-3), Ryan Speiglehoff had 11 kills and 10 digs and Evan Bullard notched 19 kills.

Grand Island 3, Ken East 1

John Oyer recorded 14 kills, five aces and two digs for the Vikings, who won the NFL contest 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, 25-14. Alex Killian added five kills, three aces and two blocks for GI (9-4 NFL). Jeff Hess had 14 kills for East (4-9).

Girls Soccer

Grand Island 2, NT 1

Jeannie Taylor put home a penalty kick midway through the second half to help the Vikings cap off a perfect Niagara Frontier League slate. Jenna Raepple also scored for GI (15-1 overall, 14-0 NFL), which got strong play in the midfield from Jordan Dudish. Amanda Smyth scored for the Lady Jacks (8-6).

Starpoint 7, Maryvale 0

Catie Hale netted a hat trick and Kara Forster had the shutout for the Lady Spartans in ECIC III play. Also for Starpoint (10-5-1 overall, 8-3-1 ECIC III), Kristi DeLabio had two goals and two assists and both Shannon Bandinelli and Michelle Hale had one tally.

Holland 3, Tonawanda 0

THS goalkeeper Deanna Bowers made eight saves in the ECIC IV loss. The Warriors finish 9-3 in the league.

Field Hockey

Barker 9, Ken West 0

Brittany Cordaro had a hat trick and Rachel Anderson picked up the shutout as the Lady Raiders claimed another Niagara-Orleans League title with a perfect 14-0 record. West finishes 0-14.

Ken East 2, Newfane 0

Rebecca Miskell tallied both goals and Sam Attea earned the shutout for East, which evened its N-O record to 7-7. Newfane finishes 5-8-1.

Girls Swimming

Starpoint 119, Will. South 49

Jessica Peronne set a pool record of 25.71 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle as the Lady Spartans moved to 6-4-1 in ECIC III. Peronne also won the 100 free and was on the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams. Courtney Gfroerer won the 200 free and was on both the 200 and 400 free relay quartets for Starpoint.
