HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 29): NT volleyball advances to semis

Delaney Laper had 15 kills and 19 digs as the North Tonawanda girls volleyball team ousted Lockport in Wednesday’s Class AA quarterfinal, 3-1.

After dropping the first game 21-25, the Lady Jacks (14-2 overall) took the next three on scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21 to win the match and advance to Friday’s semifinals, where they’ll travel to top-seeded Lancaster.

Also for NT, Lauren Metzger had 12 kills and 21 digs, Jordan Tylec notched 15 assists and four aces and Ashley Walck chipped in with six kills.

For Lockport (13-3 overall), Lea Sobieraski had 15 kills, Hannah Hall notched six kills, Katie Prue had 28 assists and Morgan Waple chipped in with 14 digs.

3-Orchard Park 3, 6-Ken West 1

Despite 22 kills from Taylor Lewandowski, the Blue Devils fell in Class AA quarterfinal action, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23. Kaley Vazquez added 23 assists and nine kills and Chelsea Moore had 18 digs for West (13-5).

8-Ken East 3, 1-Sweet Home 2

Alex Dickson and Andrea Snitzer played well as coach Julie Becker’s squad of 12 earned the Class A quarterfinal upset, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19. East (5-11 overall) will visit No. 5 Grand Island in the semifinals.

5-Grand Island 3, 4-Hutch-Tech 0

Chelsea Hall had 16 kills and Kayla Pyc added 12 kills to help the Vikings to the 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 Class A quarterfinal win. GI (9-7 overall) will host Niagara Frontier League rival and eighth-seeded Ken East in the semifinals.

2-Starpoint 3, 7-W. Sen. East 0

Veronica Crosby notched 14 kills as the Lady Spartans dismissed their ECIC II rivals, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 in Class A quarterfinal action. Lindsay Welsh, Rachel Gau and Allison Gillet each had seven service points for Starpoint (13-5 overall), which will host third-seeded Lake Shore in the semifinals.

Boys Soccer

11-Ken West 1, 6-NT 0

Tommy Ryan scored the winning goal four minutes into the extra session off an assist from Chad Battaglia in the Class AA prequarterfinal. Jim Doyle had 14 saves to earn the shutout for the visiting Blue Devils. West now travels to NFL rival and third-seeded Lockport in the quarterfinals.

3-Lockport 5, 14-Jamestown 0

Andrew Granchelli and Alex Reid scored two goals apiece to lift the Lions to the Class AA prequarterfinal win. Matt McCoy also scored and Chris Paradise earned the shutout for LHS (12-4-1 overall). Lockport hosts NFL rival and 11th-seeded Ken West in the quarterfinals.

12-Lew-Port 1, 5-Riverside 0

Robert Minicucci scored the game’s lone goal, unassisted, to help the Lancers to the Class A prequarterfinal victory. Austin Crossley had the shutout with five saves for the Lancers (6-7-2 overall). Lew-Port will visit No. 4 Iroquois in the quarters.

10-Starpoint 2, 7-Maryvale 1

Jon Wilson and Rich Barrett scored for Starpoint in the Class A prequarterfinal win. Mike Ferguson and Karl Bobsein played well defensively for the Spartans (8-5-4 overall). Joe Gabor had the lone goal for Maryvale (7-3-3). Starpoint visits No. 2 Grand Island for a quarterfinal showdown.

2-Grand Island 6, 15-Lake Shore 0

Bobby Ross buried a header off a corner kick from Joe Fischer in the 13th minute to lift the Vikings to the Class A prequarterfinal win. Ryan Osvath had two goals and two assists, Fisher had a pair of tallies and Kolby Banker added a goal for GI (13-1-3 overall). Jeremy Figler made two saves for his 13th shutout of the season.

GIRLS SOCCER

7-Tonawanda 1, 10-Alden 0

Eighth-grader Kalyn Compeau, a JV call-up, scored six minutes into the second half off a pass from Jamie Idziak as the Warriors won the Class B prequarterfinal at Clint Small Stadium. Deanna Bowers made nine saves in the shutout for THS (12-4-1 overall), which travels to No. 2 Depew in the quarters.
