HS FOOTBALL: East drops THS; O'Hara falls at Steubenville
Staff Reports The Tonawanda News
Shane Foster scored a pair of touchdowns, but Tonawanda ended the 2009 football season with a 36-14 loss Friday night to Kenmore East. It was East’s first win of the season.
Meanwhile, in Steubenville, Ohio, Cardinal O’Hara held its own against one of the Buckeye state’s top programs before falling 32-24 to close out the regular season.
For Tonawanda, Foster scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, and hauled in a 7-yard TD pass from Steve Stich in the fourth quarter. Ed Miller led the Warriors with 80 yards on nine carries.
Defensively, Stich had 10 tackles.
“We just had too many miscues in the first half,” THS coach Jason Beckman said. “We moved the ball periodically, but not with enough consistency.”
Tonawanda again played without sophomore running back Justin Bacon, who was sick.
In Ohio, the Hawks from Cardinal O’Hara played before a packed house of 9,000 in Steubenville’s “Death Valley.”
Quarterback Jabari Gordon had a strong game, completing 8 of 11 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. He also keyed the Hawks defense with 13 tackles. Gordon connected with Ryan O’Sullivan (three catches, 61 yards) for an 18-yard strike in the first half, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive.
Steubenville scored three touchdowns in the first quarter before the Hawks regrouped to get back into what was a tough, physical game in a hostile environment.
Dawuan Hicklen returned a second-half punt 45 yards for a touchdown. Fred Nolley added a two-yard score. He led the Hawks with 103 yards on 12 carries. Robert Davis had a 16-yard touchdown for the Hawks.
For Steubenville, Central Michigan-recruit Dwight Macon ran and passed for a touchdown.
Cardinal O’Hara will host a Monsignor Martin Association League A semifinal next Saturday for the right to play at Ralph Wilson Stadium for the league title.
