HS ROUNDUP (Oct. 30): Ken East boys volleyball moves on

The third-seeded Kenmore East Bulldogs will meet Frontier on Saturday at Clarence High School after beating Sweet Home 25-21, 32-30, 25-15, 25-22 in Section VI Class A quarterfinal boys volleyball action Thursday night.

Ken East (17-6 overall) was led by Todd Potter’s 15 kills and eight blocks. Kevin Whitehead and Anthony Bagarozzi each had eight kills in the win.

Girls Volleyball



Class AA semifinals

1-Frontier 3, 5-Lockport 1

Katie Prue, Amy Johnson, Erin Miller and Lea Sobieraski played well for the Lady Lions, but it wasn’t enough in a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 loss. LHS finishes 15-6, while no information was available for the Falcons.

Class A semifinals

1-Starpoint 3, 4-Lake Shore 0

Starpoint advanced to Monday’s final at Medaille with the 25-23, 25-11, 25-23 sweep. Veronica Crosby had nine service points, five kills and 11 blocks for the Lady Spartans (18-1 overall), while Syndey Palka had eight service points and 27 assists.

Class B semifinals

4-Eden 3, 8-Newfane 1

The nationally-ranked Raiders improved to 24-1 with a 25-7, 25-5, 25-16 win. Ally Pierce had three kills and two blocks for Newfane (14-7 overall).

Class C semifinals

6-Salamanca 3, 2-Roy-Hart 0

Bridget Shanahan had 12 kills and Ashley Scrinzi added nine kills, but the Lady Rams fell 25-17, 25-15, 25-16. Eight kills each by Kate Auge and Ashley Abrams set the pace for Salamanca.

Class AA semifinals

1-Clarence 2, 5-NT 0

The top-seeded Red Devils broke open a scoreless game 17 minutes into the second half, and tacked on another goal six minutes later. Clarence (18-2-1) will play Williamsville North in Monday’s title game. Meghan Lipanoga, Julie Harmon and Sarah Bretherton played well for the Lady Jacks (13-7-1).

Class A semifinals

1-Will.East 2, 4-Starpoint 1

The Flames scored a goal about 20 minutes into the second half to earn the win and advance to Saturday’s championship against Amherst. Teresa Delabio found the net off a corner kick for the Lady Spartans (17-3-1 overall). Catie Hale and Nicole Borner also played well for Starpoint. East, who’s goal scorers were not available, improved to 19-1-1.

Consolation Crossovers

Pioneer 35, Lew-Port 13

Junior quarterback Matt Cattarin broke the school record for passing yards in a career in the Lancers’ loss. Cattarin, who was 17-of-27 for 189 yards and two touchdowns, now has 2,221 yards for his two-year reign at QB. The old record was 2,141 yards by 2005 graduate Mitch Bunce. Senior tailback Alex Penders left the game early in the first quarter, leaving the Lancers heavily reliant on the air attack. Josh Reed had seven catches for 129 yards and a score. Matt Dixon also had a touchdown catch for Lew-Port (3-6 overall). Nate Meigs led the defense with 11 tackles.

Frontier 49, Niagara Falls 6

Oraine Allen scored the lone touchdown for the Falls, which finishes its season 2-7 overall. No additional information was provided.

Medina 40, Wilson 6

Junior quarterback Levi Pace threw three touchdown passes as the Mustangs closed their season with a big win. For Wilson (2-7 overall), A.J. White had 30 yards rishing and a touchdown. Defensively, Pat Walch had seven tackles and an interception and Cody Reimers added a pick.

Class AA Consolation Bowl Semifinals

N-W 18, Jamestown 13

Senior quarterback Paul Smith’s one-yard run lifted the Falcons to the road win. N-W will play the winner of Saturday’s Clarence vs. Lockport game in the Class AA Consolation Bowl Championship game at a date to be determined next week at Medina High School. Also for N-W (3-6 overall), Josh Marzahl had a two-yard touchdown run and Smith connected with wide receiver Billy Nalbone for a seven-yard strike.
