Tonawanda News — Carli Lloyd's goal in the 53rd minute proved to be the game winner, as the Western New York Flash defeated Seattle Reign, 1-0, in front of 4,993 fans at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester Wednesday night.

The win, along with a loss by Portland Thorns FC, puts the Flash into a three-way tie for second place in the National Women's Soccer League.

Lloyd took a give-and-go pass from teammate Abby Wambach and fooled Seattle goalkeeper Hope Solo into thinking she would shoot to the netminder's right side, then hooked the ball high to Solo's left and into the net.

Both teams had several good quality scoring chances that were stopped by Solo, a member of the US Women's National Team, and Flash goalkeeper Adrianna Franch, who recorded her seventh shutout of the NWSL season.

The Flash (9-4-7) earned three points for the league standings and are tied at 34 points with Portland and Sky Blue FC. The team has two games remaining, both at home, and plays next on Saturday against the Thorns at Sahlen's Stadium, beginning at 7:35 p.m.
